Steve from what I understand hte 348 boxes do have weaknesses, I've seen a few in QV (they currently have 4 on the bench!) for repair, it is quite common for them to strip their main bevel drive. I'm no expert hence the recommendation you speak to Mick, they may not be convenient for you to use but he'll give you some free advice for info a secondhand box can be as much as 6k! |

Hi Is replacing the input shaft and the appropriate bearing a long job? Can anyone estimate a time span for a specialist to complete this? Thanks Steve |

Steve I may have bad news for you and all T/348 guys...this has been discussed..you may have a problem with the loose input shaft that is a design defect inthe 348 box... |

Malcolm The car has done 73k. Can you recommend any specialists who can take on a gearbox rebuild? Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, I reckon it should be the throw-out bearing as I encountered the exact problem on my 456 6 months ago. It will be getting worse sooner or later even though you depress the clutch. However, I can't tell you the cost as I was under a warranty contract with the dealer. All the best, Ming |

Steve - Your noise would appear to be coming from the gearbox, not the thrust bearing - when you depress the clutch pedal you are "breaking" the drive to the gearbox, that's why the noise goes and that's why you can here it when driving, how many miles has the car covered ? If one bearing is failing the others could be in a similar state. MW |

Mark I know the cost is around 500 I have been investigating. I must admit that does not bother me if it solves the problem. I maintain the car always without any cost restrictions. Are you in the UK? Thanks Steve |

Steve If it is the Clutch Release Bearing prepare yourself of a shock, the new ones are adapted 355 items and cost is over 500 btw, I read with interest your plan to go to Throttle Bodies, I have a 3.4 engine in a project I'm doing and may well want ot go the same route so keep us up to date! |

I had a similar whine when my intermediate shaft bearing was failing. I cannot recall if the problem went away when the clutch was depressed or not. We had to drop the engine to replace... You may want to isolate engine vs. accessories by removing belts to those and checking for sound. - JMG |

Hi all I currently have a strange whining noise coming from my Mondial T. When I push the clutch down it goes away. Also when I am driving I get the whine still. I have been old that it could be the clutch release bearing somthing to do with the input shaft that goes in to the gearbox. If I was to replace this shaft and bearing would this stop both noises? Thanks Steve |
