Iridium has a higher melting temperature than Platinum so the center electrode can be made even smaller (and run at a higher more self-cleaning temperature). IIRC the Platinums have a 0.8mm diameter center electrode while the center electrode on the Iridiums are 0.6~0.7 mm diameter (a standard plug has a 2.0 mm diameter center electrode). Personally, I was happy enough with the cheaper Palladium V-series NGKs (1.0 mm diameter)... |

What's the difference, in function, between the platinum and iridium plugs? |

I was running the NGK platinums and changed to the iridiums this summer just for fun. Can't say if they made a lot of difference but I would like to think they did. The car certainly runs okay. Ernest. |

I think most F shops use the NGK platinum D8EVX in TRs (and I do too). With modern, high-voltage electronic ignitions (and a good condition engine -- i.e., no oil fouling) I doubt you could say that they're significantly "better" than just a "standard" type plug (maybe better longevity), but at a reasonable price (~$5 each) they're a decent value IMO (and they're a gouge at $15 each from a F shop ). Although I'm unsure if they're still readily available as the www.clubplug.net website (http://www.clubplug.net/retail_vx_ngk.html) shows them being superceded by the slightly more-expensive NGK iridium DR8EIX: http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/apps/car_truck_suv/results.asp?engineid=13173 |

Hi guys, I was asked what kind of plugs were in my TR and darn it I had not a clue. Guess I should pull one to see. I then was asked if I tried using platinum plugs. Have anyone tried platinum plugs and if so which kind? Do they make a difference at all? Thanks. Michael |
