I have seen TR's that are in the shop for the major service and the heads were pulled off to clean up the valves. they were caked on the backside with carbon. its probably not uncommon do go one step further when the powerplant is out of the car. might as well do it then.....

Funny thing these fully "documented" cars huh? I have 3 TR's at my shop right now and the one with the least amount of history is the one that is in the best shape!! This car looks like it's brand new, and has original everything!! (yes the belts have been done and it's in for a complete inspection, the owner of the car is very picky about his car). Just goes to show that even service histories can be faked very very very esaily. |

Good points. The car is not mine, but belongs to a friend of mine. She rode in my 328 and then "had to have" her own Ferrari. I think there was a fair amount of red fever involved because I didn't know she was seriously looking for one until she already bought it. I'm just trying to decipher some of the Bullshit. Seems odd that an engine out 30K was "done" and this hose wasn't changed, but who knows. JRV, I realize that there are many reasons to r&r the heads, I was just confirming what I thought in that they certainly don't come off for any reason during a belt service. FWIW, another friend of mine has driven it and said it feels VERY sluggish compared to other TR's he's driven. But that just leads us back to the records problem. Oh, well, it's a helluva way to start out in Ferrari ownership. Thanks Y'all Dave |

I think a good way to determine health of an engine is to do a leak down compression test, usu prior to purchase, but always a good thing to feel good and comfy about your engine. If it fails, then maybe you can sue the b'tards! Also, w/o documentation, how do you know the 30K service was done??? I would have someone take a look at the belts (the covers can be loosened enough to do this) to make sure they are new. |

I'll answer last question first. That hose is one PITA to replace in car, but at least it CAN be replaced in car. So in the big scheme of things it's not that big of a deal. Old hoses that split is just one of the many pitfalls of down & dirty undocumented threw on some belts to sell it 30K services. Heads can come off for a variety of reasons, too many reasons in fact to bother speculating as to why. Additionly if the engine is healthy at this point why waste energy trying to figure out the irrelivant. That's why records have value far above guess's. |

I have a friend who just bought an '89 white/tan TR. A 30K was supposed to have been done before delivery. Unfortunately the main coolant hose to the engine (big hose at firewall from coolant crosspipe to the engine) split when she shut it down in her driveway. Bummer! However, when I went to take a look at it I noticed that both heads had been off of the block. The block was dirty and stained and both heads were spotless clean shiny aluminum. Now for my questions: 1.I don't believe there is any reason to R&R the heads unless some other failure occured. Am I right? Nothing out of the ordinary was disclosed. Just an undocumented 30K. Any other reasons for R&R? 2.Is there anything especially difficult about changing this coolant hose? Seems pretty easy, but working on Ferrari's over the years I've learned that just because it looks easy doesn't always make it so! ;-) Thanks in advance for any info! Dave |
