Mitchell,
Take a good look into POR15:

www.por15.com

I've used both & POR15 is a far superior product. A body man that specializes in rust removal/restoration jobs put me onto it. He's been using it for many years w/o a single come-back to to rust reappearance. Since then I've also talked to a classic car shop who has had the same results.

Lots of auto body supply shops sell it in this area. It's come up in the chat a lot, always favorably unlike Extend which has failed over time. Search the archives for POR15 and Extend.

Extend seems to be a latex paint with phosphoric acid to do the rust conversion. It will peel on you, and/or not fully penetrate & convert the rust.

POR15 is a much more inert material after it's cured. It's claimed to be impermeable to both moisture and even oxygen. I tend to believe these claims. It's tough stuff when cured. Even battery acid won't touch it!

You can get a 'starter kit' for about $15 + shipping. For your radiator support get the black kit. Kit contains a concentrated cleaner, phosphate conversion concentrate, and the POR15 coating. Emphasis is on 'coating', it's not a paint.

I used it this spring to kill & seal over the rust on my pinch welds where the paint & undercoating had chipped away. Also used it to do final sealing & filling of my restoration of the infamous 3x8 rusty rocker panel seam. After I'd blasted as much rust away as I could. I only had light pitting, but there's always flecks of rust that blasting can't get to. That's where the conversion/sealing comes in.

Read the instructions & follow them.

Hi.

The way I've been brought up is that you can't 'treat' rust - only blast or cut it out and replace with new metal :-)

Does it work well enough? I need to do some rust treatment for one of my radiator supports. One support is rusted but can be treated, the other is totally gone and has to be rewelded.
