Tillman,

What is the oil spec you are referring to? My 575 Maranello states the oil should be around 74 PSI at 6,000 RPM. 30 weight oil is giving me excessive pressure and I will soon go to 20 weight.

Tillman,
A few months ago I let WWOC do an oil change as part of a major service. They used Agip , I assume 10W40. I noticed my oil pressure was a little lower than normal. When I changed the oil on my own, I put in Mobil 1 15W50 and the pressure came back up.
As for the different engine sound-----it could be just a perception. After all, mine definitelt runs better when it's clean and waxed. :-)

My older 308 called for 10-50W. Not available.
Definately need the 50W for oil pressure!
Went with Royal Purple 20-50W with no problems so far. Operating temp went down. Mobil 1 has a 5-50W
I have also used. The light end helps with cold start protection.
I thought about flagging our special needs to
Royal Purple. They are small enough to custom blend.

Tillman,

Avoiding oil debate, amen.

And yes, harmless :-)

Ok, so without getting into an oil holy war, the general consensus is that the noise change is basically harmless?

Sorry to be so Chicken Little-ish, but these are so different from the pushrod V8s I used to play with.

82 GTSi switched from Amsoil 20/50 (topped off with Mobil-1 20/50) to Redline 10-40. noticed changes also - all for the better: preasure more stable (less fluctuation, temp more stable at long distance driving, just seemed to be a good change.

Tillman,

Use Amsoil 2000 synth 20-50 in the 308GTS QV and yes, pressure seems to be higher than lower viscosity oil. Also, it seems to take a while (10+ minutes) for the temp gauge to get going up. During nice 30+ minute rides the temp goes up nicely while pressure decreases as the viscosity becomes more, well, fluid. This is normal it seems.

Naturally ambient temp can play a roll to how hot or cool the oil operates. In VERY cold weather i stuff a red t-shirt in the driver's side air intake to reduce the cold air from reaching the engine/etc to temps come up faster.

Enjoy the Drive,

My 328 documentation shows that the 328 originally did have Agip 20W 50 but I have a sevice bulletin showing the change to 10W 40 because the former was no longer available. I just used Castrol GTX Magnatec synthetic 10W 40 and engine conditions are about the same. I agree the 20W 50 would probably put oil pressure up a little and quite possibly noise may change also.

Henryk is right, the viscosities are different, the oil originally recommended for 328's was Agip Sint 2000 SAE 10W-40.

The oils must have been of different viscosities.

Greetings,

I just had an oil change on the 328, and put in Castrol GTX 20-50. It previously had AGIP oil in there -- I'll try to find the FoD receipt to see if it details what weight.

I've noticed a few things: the oil pressure is running higher than previously (though well within specs) and the oil temps are cooler. That's good, but the motor sounds different now. It's hard to describe, but it sounds more mechanical and buzzy at higher RPMs.

I've checked the oil level (10 minutes after shutdown on a warm motor) and it's fine.

Thoughts? There's really nothing wrong I can put my finger on, it just feels subtly different.
