Robert, I tried running it at the 3/4 cold position and it does work better, so I'll run it this way until I can take it in for freon service.

Thanks for the feedback. The freezing evaporator sounds likely -- I couldn't figure out how it could go 30 minutes before having the problem, but this explains it. I will take it in to get have the freon pressure checked (Byron Adams @ Independent Motor Works in Short Hills,NJ was recommended from a post in the NY section).

I have heard this is a common problem in 308's if you run the control on full the evaporator does freeze up. Try running the knob at 3/4's.

If your freon is low(lower than 67 psig) it can eventuality freeze up the evaproator reducing the cooling.

Unfortunately there are several reasons for your A/C to fail as it has, firstly the system should be re-gassed and the filter bottle checked on an annual basis, the chances are that you have just run low on gas.

Other than that it gets more involved, you may have a leak, or one of the two temperature sensors mounted in the heater box assembley could be faulty, or it could be either the high or low pressure switches failing, or maybe a simple wiring fault.

First step get some guages put on the car and see how much gas is in the system, about 2.2lbs of Freon gas is required to operate correctly.

Expansion valve may be freezing up for a variety of reasons.

There are a couple of things. The car is now warm and so is the condenser. This will make the a/c warmer however it should still be cold. Next point, if the system is under or over charged this can happen. When was the last time it was charged up? It is probably low on freon if it hasn't been charged in a little while unless it has a small leak.

My A/C is cold for first 30 minutes, but then becomes "cool" (not warm) after that. The condenser fan is running and the compressor is engaged when the A/C is not delivering cold air. I am still using the older freon type (86 Mondial) and prefer to keep it. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
