Charles, I forgot. You can reach Andy at [email protected], and his phone is 561-514-1620. I hope he doesn't mind my giving that out, he's been retired a while. Trevor |

Hi Charles. Unfortunately no, I didn't keep logs, but I'd suggest you contact Andy Illes down in S Fla. He's an old-time F tuner and was sort of my mentor through this project (when I could reach him). He's building a hi-po dry sump 308 for some guy (P-6 cams, 10.6:1 Borgos, trick heads, etc), and I know he's been keeping a step by step photo "diary" of the project. Trevor |

Trevor, I also have a 77 308. It does not need a rebuild, but if you have any suggestions, or logs, that you kept on the rebuild, I would be very appreciative to see them. Thanks, Charles |

Thank you also Jorma. I timed them today already, no problems. It was just that one particular illustration in the manual that threw me for a loop. Per my friend's excellent advice, I just decided to check with you Ferrari experts to get my pulse back to normal. Thanks again to all. |

Answer to your last qustion about timing the cams. No worries, the size of the bearings do not move the center of the rod, and the crank. |

Thanks a million Bill and Steve!!! Yeah that's EXACTLY the picture that had me going. Though I knew what both of you say about 90* blocks and flat cranks (in other engines) that pic gave me a heart attack anyway. My buddy was right, this really is an amazing site, and thanks again to both of you. |

Trevor -- if you mean this figure:
it is misleading -- the crank 2-D shape is right, but the piston locations up-down are not right/clear (they just drew both pistons equi-distant from the throw like it was a "flat" configuration). Take that crank shape and put #1 at TDC in a 90 deg-V block and you'll get #5 thru #8 all at mid-stroke. |

Trever, The front and rear bank bores are 90 degrees apart. The crank is flat so the crank journals are 180 degrees apart. The 1&8 crank journal are in line with the 4&5 journal. The 2&7 journal is in line with the 3&6 journal. What this means is pistons 1&4 will be at TDC simultaneously, one on the intake stroke and the other on the exhaust stroke. Similarly, 2&3 will be at TDC simultaneouly as will 5&8 and 6&7. It is not possible for 1, 6 and 7 to be at TDC at the same time. Only pistons in the same bank can be at TDC at the same time. |

Hi guys. This is my first post, a friend refered me here and I've been reading for several days - what a fantastic site, what amazing knowledge, and what willingness to share it!!!!! I bought a trashed '77 308 GTB and am almost done rebuilding the engine, but one thing is really throwing me for a loop. My heads are still off, and when I bring the #1 piston to TDC, my book shows that 6 and 7 should also be at TDC, but all the 5-8 pistons are about at midstroke. The engine's obviously been rebuilt before since the liners/pistons/rings are oversize, and the bearings are all 1st undersize. Anybody know if that's normal, or what gives? Is that going to give me trouble timing the cams? Thanx for any help and info. |
