To get the front head off, usually requires the front engine mounts to be disconnected and then tilt the engine up, leaving the rear bank down low. Some cars have a thicker baulkhead sound/heat shield and may require a few studs to be taken out, but it is definitely much quicker to leave the engine IN the car...if you are sure the head job is all you require..... |

The pesky front head will come off with the engine in the car, but you have to juggle a bit. I've done it solo, but STRONGLY advise a good, strong, sober friend to help. Regards, Andy |

Are you sure the front head was off Hans? Rear heads as stated earlier are no-problemo, but the front ones would require funky maneuvering to get off... It would be less effort and time to rip the whole engine out. BTW, who was it Tonkin or Carlo? |

The Rear head can be done easily, I have done 2 different cars rear heads in car. I wouldn't think about attempting a front in car. |

Steve, after the difficulty I had getting the intake manifolds off, I can fully appreciate your humour about the prospects for getting the heads off! Thanks all. That was pretty much my guess --- looked like the engine needed to be out. By the way, this car is an '81 GTSi. |

I would pull it as well but someone here said they pulled the front head in car by removing all the cam cap studs for extra firewall clearance and he managed to get it out. Sounds like alot of fiddling around. The next problem is if you go through all that trouble in car and the head is stuck to the block like its welded on then it all has to come out anyway. |

I have seen this done in the car. You have to slide the entire engine toward the rear of the car about as far as it will go. I don't think it's worth the aggravation. It's much easier to pull the engine and mount the whole works on a stand. This way you can be sure of everything being done right the first time. An the fact that it will be much easier on you're back!! |

It's damn near impossible to get them off with the engine out of the car! The serious answer is on the 2-valves you can't get the front head over the studs as-is. What year/model 308? |

Is it possible to remove the heads with the engine in the car? Is it reasonable --- can the heads be reinstalled properly (alignment, torqued, etc.)? |
