Unfortunately, new is apparently not an option. Still looking for way to repair it.

Jim;

It does not look good. From what i see in the second picture you had a piece get knocked out without that part i feel you are SOL. The only thing i can think of is to fabricate i new swivel assy out of aluminum. I would not think that it would not be that hard to make just a little time consuming.

It looks hopeless to fix..unless I basically fix the mirror in place on the swivel with a bolt, which would probably lead to worse probs down the road. I think there is a piece of the post/stud that is missing, as it must have sheared in two places. Any ideas, TR guru?

There are some nifty extractors call drill-outs these are lefthanded and can be used in variable spped drills. I've had good results with them. here's a link for info http://www.codymercantile.com/sstore/items/5347.html

I think I am going to drill it out, tap it, fabricate a new stud and try that on for size. Unless I get a better idea than welding it.

Jim;

I seriously doubt that it can be welded except by perhaps a select few of the most adept welders in the world. I realy dont have a good concept of what the part is or the damage to it to give you a good answer.

Have a great week

My fiancee has the digi cam at the office...all I can say is at the bottom of the mirror there is a stud or post (whatever) that extends down into the swivel bracket that is on the door, which is sheared. I will try to remove the piece that is sheared off and remains inside the bracket. It was sheared off flush with the bottom of the mirror. It looks like aluminum. I am sure others have had this problem. Maybe it can be welded like Robert said he had done. I hope so. I just can't imagine how you can weld on the bottom of the mirror without major heat damage to the paint.

Robert,
How do they weld it without burning the paint? Is it aluminum? Jim

Phil,
I haven't done anything with it yet. There is a stud like, bolt like thing from the mount/swivel bracket to the mirror that sheared off. I will see exactly what it is when I take it apart. Maybe its just a shear pin of some sort that is easily replaced. Wouldn't that be great! I am not a body man. I am hoping I won't have to get an entire new mirror, mismatched paint, etc.

Jim

Do you mean.... stud, as in - bolt type thing?

Sounds like an easy repair using rivnut/helicoil/timesert etc??? Whats the problem??

Or do you call the mount/swivel bracket for the mirror a "stud".

Seems like you'd have no drama fixing that if you can do a job like TR cams...

I broke a mirror stud (got hit by 8 yr old girl on bike..she's ok, car isn't) on '91 TR. It looks like a stud that sheared off, anyway. (I hope mirror doesn't need replaced). Any ideas on vendor?
