JRV- please clarify, "an engine can't suck more air in than it can have rammed in." A turbo essentially just Rams more air into an engine that it can suck, giving it more HP Boost. Mark |

The trumpet length is very important too. Longer ones improve torque, shorter ones improve power, somewhere in the middle is the desired compromise. I hope those K+N's have the trumpets inside. The modern cars all have variable length intake systems for flatter torque curve's. Works well too...I've had a couple of experiences where the two vacuum control solenoids have been connected incorrectly, which makes the variable intake system get in a mucking fuddle. Costs huge lap time on a 360 Challenge....about 1.5 seconds. Rough guess 50BHP? Very easy to mis-connect, and hidden behind the side panel so invisible from view. |

There also may be some airflow pressure effect of having all of the intakes in one enclosed area in addition to the overarching importance of cool intake charge. The Forza article is interesting and worth the read on a number of mods, but I sure wish they had stated what they found their optimum jetting to be. |

I would venture to guess the air ram effect is not as great as having colder air feed the carbs. Build a cold air box around the carbs out of fiberglass, and feed air into it the same way you did before. Enclose it all under the hood with some clear plexiglass. It will look similar to what you have now, only be a lot lighter and you'll be able to see it when the hood is open. Also, you'll get cold air to the box/carbs |

The dyno tests in Forza of a GT4 engine showed a decrease in HP with the stock air cleaner removed. |

Poor memory recall invariably leads to faulty "data" but I do remember reading that the BHP loss from warm air was significant -- I'd guess more than enough to overwhelm the supposed better breathing from the individual air filters. Even the 308 LM car had a ("ram") air box. Now if you are doing this for looks, that's something else... |

Good point JRV on the ram air. I just didn't know ram air was such a big effect compared to engines "sucking" air. Seems like if engines suck, then the more surface area they have to suck from the better. |

an engine can't suck more air in than it can have rammed in. Also, unless one does the dyno test in a wind tunnel the tests are invalid, as the Ram Air comes from the speed of the vehicle and the force of the air being rammed in at speed. |

We're having this same debate with our Rx7's. We can run the stock air filter housing which is enclosed with a snorkel that extends out towards the front right corner of the car. We also allow in our rules an aftermarket filter housing that is like a sandwich that sucks air in all around it. I'm sure these open filter designs allow more air in, but if more air isn't needed, then cooler air would obliviously be better. I think you would just have to dyno it both ways to compare.

Those AC's look nice, however they defeat the original built in ram air design and force the engine to suck in very hot engine comp. air instead of cooler outside air. |

Nice set ups. Thanks. Do you happen to know what the size is? |

They may look great and improve access at the expense of a little loss in power due to warmer air feeding your engine. Try this site: http://www.webercarburetors.com/ppw/html/aplication_guide/air_filter_applications_by_carbu.htm |

Ok, I have the quad-carbed 308, I have the factory air cleaner setup and it weighs a ton. I was wondering does any company make the mini air cleaners for each carb. This way I would have 4 small independant air cleaners, like allot of people put on VWs. The ones that have the chrome casing either circular or oval shaped is ok, and are about 1500 pounds lighter? Not to mention they look awesome and give it the muscle car look. Also, I don't have to take off 40 nuts to get to the carbs to tune them. Any input guys? I have asked around and people said they are made, but they don't know by who. Thanks. |
