Russ -- correct? -- no, but not an uncommon status IME. I prefer to use the short threaded "CO plug" (F PN 110860) to block the exhaust sampling ports and keep the tubes themselves in the toolkit (otherwise they get embrittled from the heat). Do a search on:

110860

to get to the previous threads/info.

The 308 GT4s have four sampling pipes on the front bank, but only access holes on the rear bank. You are supposed to screw the tube supplied in the spare kit into each header on cyls 1-4 for testing it seems. Except my headers have some kind of gunk in the holes and a metal self-tapping screw in each one except for no 4 which has the sampling tube screwed into it. Anyone know if this is correct? The reason I got into this is my heat shield is loose, and I tried to use a bent washer-thingy under the screws to hold the heat shield in place. Anyone know how the shield is supposed to be secured....I don't see any designed means to do that. Or have a suggestion to keep it from rattling like a tin can full of stones?!

Thanks,

yes there are 8, four in the front and four in the back. the 2 ones that are broken are in the back.

I just found out also that one was broken time ago and cancelled by flattening the end, probably a prevoius owner did it. And the other one is the one just broke.

I will remove them and cancel them with bolted tops, and use it that way until I receive the replacement part.

Thanks for the help.

Julio--those tubes are for accurate emissions testing. and for adjusting the air/ fuel mixture precisely As far as I know, they serve no other purpose and, as far as I know ,could be removed--with the threaded holes plugged of course. By the way, there should be four bolted to on each of the front and rear exhaust manifolds.

I just found out that 2 of the 4 SNAIL TUBEs (Part #118886 ) did break in my 328 GTS US Version. That is why my car is making this strange exhaust noise.

What are they used for? I am under the impression that they are used for some kind of smoke probe as they look like empty tubes. And the European version does not have them.

As this car is in Europe, should I replace them or just remove them and close them at the headers?

Thanks.
