Andrew,

I guess this method could work OK but you need to have an initial clearance of more than 0.50 mm to start with. A feeler gauge will only take up clearance it obviously can't create it.

Yes, that's what I meant.. sorry I didn't make it clearer. Just leave the feeler guage in to time against it.

Thanks Andy! Are you saying to simply use the feeler gage as the "additional" clearance? Not a bad idea at that. I may give it a shot! You are also correct about TDC.....since EVERYTHING is based off this, it makes sense to get it exactly right.

I thought I'd start a new thread on this one since the question of "how do you get the 0.50 clearance" has come up so often. First of all, in one thread, JRV said he likes to mount his degree wheel on the flywheel end - true!! It's way to easy to bump your pointer, etc. with it on the balancer. It's also easier to mount there.

The mystical 0.50 issue is a FAR overcomplicated no-brainer. Measure your clearance - subtract 0.50 - stick a feeler guage of that thickness in, and time away. This method also takes care of ramp angle issues, which calculations don't.

The most important thing is an exact TDC, even flywheel marks can be off a few degrees. With #1 at estimated/indicated TDC, rock the crank back and forth slightly, watching the dial indicator, and noting the degrees where the piston just starts moving in both directions. Half-way in between is exact TDC, so adjust/bend your pointer until you get the same degrees either side of the wheel's TDC mark... Bingo. If the flywheel mark is off (50/50 it will be), obviously, file a correct one.

Hope it helps someone,
Andy
