Be aware that wider "range" oils tend to leave more engine deposits, due to the nature of the longer viscosity modifier polymer chains. I used Castrol 5W-50 (with a lot of cleaning additives) in my Celica, but switched to the Mo-1 5W-30 when it became a winter car. If you drive your Ferrari year-round, you might want to consider a winter and a summer oil (like winter/summer tires). Maybe a 5W-30 and a 15W-50. Anyone know a source for the Helix 5W-40? |

Ken, I ran 5-50 Castrol this winter, then went to 15-50 Mobil 1 in the summer. The 5-50 was good to get the oil pressure up quickly during cold starts. I have had no problems with either leaking, as some might think because of them being synthetic. From all I have read 10-40 today is far better than 10-50 from 1983 era so I would think these oils are helping the motor. |

A sage who should know (Dema Elgin of Elgin cams) told me to avoid any synthetic marked with "For Gasoline Engines Only" in an older car. The additives were changed to preserve the cat converters and they don't lead to the same swelling of the butyl seals. I had some old Mobil 1 (5w-30 I think) lying around, it had the imfamous mark. I run Castrol Syntec 5w-50. It doesn't. HTH |

Ken, I used Mobil 1 15/50 in previous QV but it saw some track time and high heat. I think for normal driving, 10/40 is just fine. It was my impression that the QV ran a little cooler with the synthetic, but without a real good, controlled test, I would not bet on it. Dave |

Currently, I am using Agip SINT 2000 10W-40 in my 308QV. This is a semi-synthetic oil and replaces the 10W-50 originally recommended for my 308QV. With the recent discussions of a 50W oil helping to reduce the engine temp of a 308, I have been considering switching to Agip 5W-50 full synthetic. Is the 5W-50 full synthetic a wise choice for a 308QV, and if so, will it help reduce the engine temp a little? Thanks. Ken |
