Ken,
LOL. I'd really appreciate that.

Tom, if I see anyone running Florida around with towels on their heads holding Ferrari cats I'll give you a call and report 'em!

Its important the by pass pipe has the O2 bung otherwise the car will run rich and you will get a strong exhaust smell

I removed the cats on my 78 308 GTS and the exhaust note was louder, and it stunk...

I took the cats off myself. I had the car 2 years before I did it and it did not have that same exhaust smell when they were on.

Ken,
I have an 88 Mondial without the cat. There is a 10 HP difference from Euro (no cat) to U.S. (with cat). Assuming differences in ECU programming, cam, etc. , i'm assuming I gained about 5 HP. Not enough to feel but she has a louder and nicer exhaust note. I've also got that unburned gas smell but not in the car. I have to stand behind to notice it.
Oh yeah. In case the EPA is monitoring this list, I didn't remove the cat. It was stolen by terrorists in need of platinum for some upcoming dastardly deed. I will not rest until I track them down and get my cat back !

Tommy, did you remove the cats or were they already off? If you removed them, did you notice the same smell when you had them on the car?

Mine has no cats and I get that strong smell too. It does it all the time even after I have adjusted the CO. Aside from the occasional fireball from the Tubi on the track the car runs fine. I have been running this setup since 1999. (On long highway trips I am getting about 18 mpg)

No,

If your car is running properly (not rich or missing)you shouldn't have any smell.

I put a factory test pipe on my 328, it seems to rev easier and faster at low rpms, its also a bit louder but I like it. Depending on your model some have 2 cats some 1 like mine you should get a few more HP maybe 3-5.

The biggest reason I did mine was the safety factor in case you have a intermittent bank go out it reduces the risk of fire the performance increase was a bonus

I had test pipes on a previous '84 308QV with stock exhaust. HAd dynos done 1 week apart on the same dyno with and without cats. The curves of the dyno were identical and the peak hp/ft.lbs were both under 1% increase. The car had more "reasonance" in the cabin without and at stoplights I could smell the unburnt gas.

It WILL be a bit louder, and you may gain a few hp...but without a dyno test before and after, it is purely speculation.

It is possible to actually lose horsepower when making changes to the exhaust system from OEM.

It varies from car to car, Kenneth. The best way is to get your hands on a set of test pipes and run your car on a dyno.

I have an 85 Euro QV and we don't have emissions testing any longer. I was going to remove my system and replace with one without the cats. Any idea on the gain in HP??

Thanks
