"My leather dash covering is in bad need of replacement."

And you have been using leather conditioner every month over the span of your posession of this car; have you not?

I had one made. I got it from Italian Parts. It think they are a sponser for this site.It fits perfectly and makes a huge difference in keeping the sun out of the interior. It is a Sun Shield brand. The website is Italiancarparts.com

Bob,

Are you using any special sunshield? I was having trouble finding one to fit well for my 355

Thanks,

Michael

I just had the dash redone in my 95 F355. I now use a sun shield in the windshield to protect the dash when it is sitting in the sun. If you look at the Ferrari leather patern, it is just enough material to tuck under the defroster vents. When the leather shrinks, their is not enough material to prevent the leather from pulling out from under the vents and windshield. I had it recovered in leather with enough material tucked under the vents so if it does shrink alittle, it won't pull away.

Frank....

A few years ago I had an 88 TR with 24km and a 90 Diablo with 23km side by side in my showroom. Both cars were black on clack (heat sinks). The Diablo spent it's life in sunbaked AZ and Alberta....the TR in Ontario and Alberta.

Guess which car still looked new inside ?

The TR dash leather was pathetic.....the seat bolsters were worn as well and the overall interior feel was one of a kit car.

Porsche had the same problem with some 928's. I have a friend whose 83 has a screwed up leather dash too. It's dried to pieces.

My BMW M5 has a leather dash and it has sit in the sun at work 5 days a week for over three years and 70k miles and is as perfect as the day I bought it. Ferrari must use poor quality leather or installation to have so much trouble with shrinking leather dashes. I did have the dash in my TR redone at a local uphostery shop for around $400 I believe.

You should cover it with vinyl not leather. I have bitched about this since Ferrari started this again in the mid 90's. The leather cannot tolerate the sun. Ferrari should have never, ever done this.

I don't remember where I heard this, but I was told that either the leather itself or the manner of its installation was designed specifically not to hinder the deployment of the airbag. I think a Ferrari salesman told me this when I asked why many of the 355's I had been looking at in Texas had leather issues on the area covering the airbag. Something to consider in such a project.

They are called Security torx, basically a regular torx bit with a hole in the middle. Once you have disconnected the air bag, be sure not to turn the key on or it will set a code. I hope that you find a really good upholstery person because the dash leather is not real easy to reproduce.

My leather dash covering is in bad need of replacement. Assuming that the dash is easy to remove, it looks like removal and replacement of the leather would be pretty straight forward.

I have already removed the instrument pod and the vents. I am having a problem with the airbag due to what looks like special torx bolts.

Has anyone successfully done this on their own?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Grant
