Anyone know why one would be nylon and one metal? What's the benefit or reason for the nylon? |

Drat it, I think I've just been had. Bought a 308 thermostat on eBAY for about $25 last month. The lower part is metal (sound familiar)... Not only that, but my son works in a VW dealer's parts dept & his girlfriend at AutoZone... Ah, well, could have been worse, could have bought it from FNA. |

Steven, I just put a thermo from a 79 x 1/9 in my 80 308. My original one wasn't bad but I was redoing the h2o pump so as long as I had it apart I decided to go with a new one. I've run the car all summer with no problems or difference in operating temp. I got it from like autozone or checker or... sorry I don't remember exactly where. Also, I don't have or remeber the part number. It was a $5.00 part, and it's rated to come on at 180 degrees. The only physical difference I could see was it didn't have the nylon washer thing on the bottom half of the thermo, it was just metal. Get a second opinion but mine seems to work just fine. |

There's a cross reference for 308 parts here on FerrariChat, at www.ferrarichat.com/partsandservice/308PartsXref/index.htm Here's a thermostat cross reference I have for the 308s: Radiator thermoswitch/thermostat for 308's can be sourced from a VW dealer, fits all Golfs/Rabbits 1980+, 180 degree, cost $12. It turns out that Autozone shows the SAME thermostat part number for both a 1984 VW Rabbit and a 1980 Fiat X/1-9. The part number is "437-180" (180 degrees F). Price: $5.99. Quite a bit better than more than around 10 times that from a Ferrari dealer. In fact, even Sodacom's (whom I normally like as a source) has them for $58.20, though they do have the nylon lower part, rather than metal there.

Gentlemen: In March, I believe that is correct, there was a thread concerning the fact that a Fiat X 1/9 used the same thermostat as a 308. Does anyone know if this has been confirmed. Along the same lines, I swear I have seen a "parts cross-index" somewhere on the Web. Am I crazy or might someone have the address? Thanks in advance. Steve Schroeder
