I took it out by taking the grill off which is how I thought it would come. I was just making sure. It is remmy delco (if I remember correctly) and I updated it to the 110amp one. the car feels like a different car right now, funny how a car running on just battery power feels so sluggish and all of sudden its like it just woke up. Thanks for all the input guys. |

Mine is also an 86 model and I did not need to remove the plenum. I did remove the small grille and lip at the back window. Four bolts for each part. I was then able to get it out. I imagine taking off the plenum would make it even easier to remove but it is not necessary. |

Early models (mine is a 1986) require that one remove the injection plenum to allow the alternator to clear the forward aspect of the deck lid. This is true even with all the grill-work removed. This lip is immediately below the rear window. Easy once one decides to remove the plenum. Jim S. |

I replaced mine recently and it goes just as Phil said. Not too difficult. My alt had failed before so I had one custom made locally. No big deal and it works great. |

It's quite straight forward. Remove the small panels over the top first, of course. The trick is that the swivel bolt doesn't come right out, but it doesn't need to. Once it's forward enough, the alternator simply lifts out the top. It's very rare that your local electrical specialist can't repair it. Replacement is only for extreme failures. Check for the washer on the sliding spacer though, or it'll drop into the black hole..... |

Has anyone ever replaced one with the motor in the car? What is the easiest way? And does anybody have a cross reference or part number that can be cross referenced? |
