Thank you, Malcolm, for the reply, and for posting the relative wiring diagram (very helpful).

Both lights are not illuminating with the new bulbs installed, but both lights have current to them.

With bulbs installed, both the positive and negative side of the light assemblies show current to my test light.

With bulbs not installed, only the positive side of the light assembly shows current (not certain about the assembly on the driver's side, however, in this case, as I can't remember what the result was when tested).

Perhaps I should try running the seperate earth wire as you suggest and see how this affects the intensity of the illumination. In effect, I guess the test light was doing this (basic probe light with ground wire / alligator clip to chassis ground), and causing the bulbs to illuminate, albeit very faintly vs. no illumination whatsoever.

Just checked the wiring diagram - it does get it's earth from the switch, but via the current socket - also just a thought does the other light work, if so it could be the wiring between the lights.

The correct bulb is 12 volt 5 watt so your bulb is ok (assuming the new bulb hasn't blown), If you have power to the lamp unit then it sounds like you are not getting an earth - try running a separate earth wire to prove the point. Also check the little micro-switch, I'm not sure but that may break the earth wire to the lamp and that could be your problem. If its not an easy fix let me know and I'll post a wiring diagram

I noticed last night that the glove compartment courtesy lights were not functioning, so I picked up some new bulbs and changed them out [purchased Sylvania European Lamps #6418 (C5W) - License, Courtesy, Trunk and Dome (Tubular style)] -- as these matched the size of the ones already in the car).

Well, no luck -- they still did not illuminate.

So, I pulled out the handy test light -- and things seem to check out current-wise (power on hot side but no power on ground side with bulbs out ~ power on both sides with bulbs in) with seemingly good strong current as evidenced by the bright glow of the test light.

Still, the bulbs will not illuminate.

For a final check, I touched the test light probe to both the end of the bulb/lamp and the plug/prong, and the new bulb/lamp began to glow faintly.

Any ideas what might be the problem here? Is this the wrong lamp size? If so, what lamp should I be using? Thanks in advance for any help on this one.
