If you continue to have fouling issues, you may want to switch to the hotter NGK plug as others have done. That would be the BP5ES or BPR5ES in resistor version.

Thank you everyone...

I'll have to find out if the jetting was changed....the smoke smells strong of fuel, not oil - the compression/leakdown figures were good.

You say you had the carbs rebuilt - was the jetting changed from standard set-up. Are you sure the "smoke when starting from cold" is a carburation problem - could it be burning engine oil which has drained down via the valve guides overnight ?

If you think it's running too rich (although your mechanic says it's okay) try this - let the car idle (1000 rpm) for ten minutes, remove the spark plugs and see what colour the are, you can adjust individual cylinder mixture screws accordingly. Or a quicker test, turn all the mixture screws in 1/4 of a turn and see if that makes any difference - you will have to raise the tickover back to 1000 rpm or just over. Don't rely on the reading your rev counter is showing it may be showing 1000 rpm when in fact the engine speed is lower, if you doubt it's reading connect a reliable rev counter to the ignition system or set the idle speed "by ear"

Turning the idle up a bit may be helpful...I believe the spec is 1000 rpm, +- 100 rpm, so you are on the "low side" of spec.

hi, thanks so far....I'm using one set of points,
ignition timing was fine, new accel pumps in carbs but I am not sure of the jetting........

Are you running both sets of points??
Have him check that idle points are not
fried. I had a low idle problem traced to
intermittent coil on bank 5-8...Either way, warm idle at 900 rpm is a bit low. Try around 1000-1050.
Before digging into carbs make sure the ignition/
distributors are on the money. Good luck.

How's it jetted? Are the accel pumps new?

Hi,

After over 2 years of searching for a good carbed 308, I finally found a real winner (my mechanic agrees). BUT, I am now having a "problem" with it.

First, let me state that the car recently underwent a major service, carbs rebuilt, ignition rebuilt, etc....

I noticed the following behavior with the car:

During a cold start (the car starts right up, by the way), the idle is really low (about 600rpm). After it starts to warm, the idle creeps up to its set 800-900rpm point. As it idles cold ,it is somewhat smokey (smokey as in a mixture that is too rich). As it warms it smokes less.

When the car is warmed up - it idles smooth and solid at about 900rpm. At speed the car runs like silk right up to redline and blows no smoke.

Now, when I blip the throttle from an idle (even when warm), the revs come up smooth but fall very quickly and the car almost wants to stall, but catches and gradually approaches its 900rpm idle. So, it is hard for me to take off from a standstill without really concentrating on my throttle foot.

At a stoplight on a hill, I barely could get the car to move without stalling (no, it is not my clutch work!:-) ) - the engine could not handle the quick blip of the throttle before the clutch was engaged. The engine would again, rev and fall immediately. Sometimes as I pull in to a parking lot, say, and disengage the clutch and roll into a parking spot, the engine exhibits the same behavior - it wants to stall, then comes back to life.

I thought it was running rich, so I brought it back to the mechanic (very well known and reputable who performed the tune-up - he performed the tune-up for the dealership that sold it to me. So, the car was with a dealership for months after his tune up.)He checked the carbs, and all mixture settings were right on the money. He, in fact, could not duplicate my problem. He said the plugs might have been fouled by the dealership or the car was flooded recently, so drove it aggressively to "clean" up the plugs. Also, I should mention entire fuel system on this car was recently flushed, with all fuel lines replaced (fuel pump original though).

What do you think is happening here? My mechanic said the car is fine and could not replicate the problem. What gives?

Thank you in advance,

Anthony
