Bernd,
I saw your post about tire failure at high speed. Glad you're allright. The car, what can I say except what a shame. Good luck and hope they can salvage your 355. Really sorry this happened to you.

Bert, Thomas, Joseph, James, Adnaan,

Thanks for yout sympathy guys, I'll post the whole story in the general discussion forum these days.

Bert - max rpm with hood down were 8300 - 8400, with hood up 200 rpm +

Joseph - the first hard impact was with the rear, followed by a lighter with the front, all while the car was spinning like hell - that was my luck. I only hit the crash-barrier twice and nothing else. That's why the airbags didn't came of. The whole cinetic energie was exterminated by the spinning, the police measured tire marks over a distance of half a mile. I' ll post a picture that'll give you an idea.

Drive save, stay healthy

1975 308 GT4

1) Voltage regulator of the Alternator... I'm on the third one, seems to work now - about $20 each one
2) Vacuum leaks on the carb throttle shafts - tube of grease $free
3) Slow windows too... I still have to do the passenger's side door one of these days - about $75 worth of felt window channel @ 24ft long (for both doors), plus cable for the winding mechanism, I forgot how much.
4) Dim dashboard lights... wires and fuse - under $10
5) Oil leaks from seals and gaskets and bent exhaust valves, clutch, rebuilt carbs, electronic ignition conversion, etc... - never totalled that job up, but probably $3-5000.

Keep in mind, these are Canadian dollars I'm spending.

87 328 GTS, at 29K miles, the steering rack bushings (internal) sacked out and steering developed a bit of play and started to follow ruts very easily....new factory rack fixed it right up. Not an uncommon occurance on the 308/328 cars according to others...Many folks don't realize they have a problem, thinking it is "normal"...

1974 365 GT4/BB

1)Slow/seized window motors
2)Poor AC (the "next" winter project)
3)Warm/hot running in traffic (Finally fixed this year)
4)Not particulary well behaved in traffic
5)Low fuel light on, despite frequent fill-ups

And last, but certainly not least....
6)Can't seem to get that smirk off my face, after a blast down the highway

Otherwise, pretty much "Honda-like" reliability!

Tip: Save the images as .jpg - fantastic resolution but will use less k-bytes.
Bitmaps are huge files, though they look the same. That's why your bitmaps didn't load. Look forward to seeing the shots, gruesome as your description is hinting. <<<<<(Dangling Participle)

1981 308 GTBi

1) electric gremlins - just keep looking, they show their faces sooner or later - $ cheap - mostly time

2) rust on my lower door starting to show - not resolved yet -$ - a lot I imagine ( I will know this winter)

3) missing supercharger - cant seem to find it every time I look in the engine bay - $ - I will let you know as soon as Mark E builds one for a 2V car.

4) 2nd gear grind - first I shifted from 1st to 3rd then I fixed it by replacing snychro - $1800.

5) fuse box - repaired by Verell (a great job I might add)- $ not much

Robert, the driver's door on mine also "sticks". It is touching the rubber molding on the car.

82 308 GTSi

1. water pump
2. differential
3. slow windows
4. crappy A/c (no longer have that ugly heavy compressor)
5. Parking a 1/4 mile away from the mall, only find a mini van parked half a foot from your car when you return.( A nice couple of 2 liter bottles of spring water in the gas tank of the van makes me feel much better!!)

Fantastic responses. This is really helping me, as im sure you all are too. Im potentially buying a mondial QV, so its good to see what tends to go wrong. Seeing the same problems occuring on the same models will be good for future and current owners im sure!

Keep it up!!

1990 348ts
1. A/C control unit dead, toast, never worked (have new one to install).
2. Air Damn (just fixed again) taking coarse on "How to calculate drive way approach" .
3. Slow windows - fixed
4. Electronics in general are a mystery with poor documentation.
5. 1-4 slow down light occasionally comes on when car cool (checking ECU, 13 yrs. Old).

But like the rest of you Ferrari guys driving and looking at these cars is so cool you just fix'um and move on. And Thanks to FerrariChat I've solved many issues myself. - Thanks!

Good driving and watch out for those speed traps

1995 F355B
--
1 headers--replaced under warentee
2 clutch--$2000
3 still waiting for anything else to go wrong.

P.S. I do not consider having to replace brake pads after 8 days at a track a problem, it is standard maintanence. I got the car at 22K miles freshly serviced, it is now at 39K miles in 2 years.

1978 308 GTS.

These are 5 (or so) things many or most every 25 year old 308 will need (in my opinion and from my experience) or problems it will have...

Alternator rebuild
Fuel pump
Water pump
Fusebox overhaul / aftermarket replacement
Slow window motors
Air pump replacement (or removal) due to failure
Radiator cap

Possibly:
Front and rear caliper rebuild
All hoses
Radiator fan overhaul / motor rebuild / replacement
Radiator refurb / "core"

Mine's had everything on this list except for the radiator job.

1992 348 challenge
---
1 - Crappy sub standard electrical everything.
2 - Leaking roof (348 challenge TS - strange I know)
3- Intermitent failure of either 1-4 or 5-8 banks with no warning lights. Fixed by unpluging and reconnecting air flow sensors (I think - not the throttle body connectors) - always solves the problem.
4 - A/C, still unable to get it working 15 hours labour, no go, agent tried every fix listed in FC and still nothing.
5 - Horn not working - agent replaced various relays, fuses then the siezed compressor.

BUT still the smile of my day when I drive her.

Same 1975 GT4 as Robert Garven has. Almost the same issues:

1. Drivers side door bottom rusts. Will need to fix in a few years.

2. Lots of exhaust, my carbs run rich.

3. Small Leaks, fix as many as possible but the main culprit is the Shift Shaft seals. Fixed it once, did not help. Will get to it again.

4. Got my antenna to work by replacing it with the one from Kragen. (Robert, contact me and I'll tell you how to wire it).

5. Old electrical wirings, aren't they fun?

Adnaan
1. In my experience (26 year old carb'd 308), most of the rubber or other perishable parts. Includes seals (shift shaft, calipers), dust boots, hoses (radiator), bushings (control arm), gaskets etc are perished or starting to go if they've not been replaced. Parts cost is reasonable. Labor can be expensive if you do not do the work yourself.
2. The window motors covered below seem to be fairly notorious. I pulled mine apart, cleaned, lubed everything works fine.
3. 2nd gear synchros - need to warm the box before use. Live with it.
4. Brakes. Rotors and pads. Particularly if you do track work. Caliper rebuilds and the "junction box" at the intersection of the brake lines (early version tends to go out - mine did).
5. Ignition system (rebuild distribs, new rotors etc). I replaced mine but points, caps etc needed replacement/it was on the horizon.

1990 348,

1.Flywheel (poor hot start)
2.Bad connector on power module (bad idle)
3.Slow electric windows (bad connector in door)
4.Broken movement dampener on power window motor (rattle in door when closing)
5.Re-adjusting gear cable's (going bad in gear)

Everything solved thanks to all on Ferrari Chat.

1985 Testarossa
1. Needed transmission rebuilt (completed - 17K)
2. Tight foot area, difficult to drive with large shoes on.
3. Long warm up.
4. High cost of parts and to maintain.
5. Can't think of a 5th.

All in all, still love the cars.

1975 GT4 I love this car it has very few faults so I must be picky here

1. Drivers side door sticks. I removed it took it apart twice there is no adjustment to speak of. Tech bulletin says load the extremity of the door with 80 Kilos...... Started to jack the car up by the door then decided to live with it rather thann breaking the door off at the hinges!

2. Lots of exhuast, my carb car runs rich I think it is great being asphixiated, but my wife is a more sensitive creature.

3. Small Leaks, Every time I work on the car I fix all I can find, I think this is normal. I had a friend with a 78 boxer store his car at my house for a couple of months, he said it never leaked, guess what!!!! controled seepage!!! :-)

4. Can't seem to get my attenna to work so I unplugged it. Got to get new one and figure out how it works!!!

5. Oh, the only real problem I had was an outer timing gear bearing exploded, so I replaced all four bearings including a new timing gear. $1000
for parts. I heard a weird noise and after removal of the wheel well you could see the bottom timing gear moving about 1/2!! Yikes

1986 328 GTS
---
1. Slow electric windows - haven't fixed.
2. Poor or no syncro for Reverse - always go slow and put in first before reverse.
3. 2nd doesn't work until warm - shift from 1st to 3rd until warm.
4. Vibration noises - find the source and fix it.
5. A/C weak compared to newer cars - get use to it.

Dont mean to be negative, but I thought it would be useful to list the top 5 problems you've had with your Ferraris.
List the following:

1. Make & Year of your ferrari
2. Top 5 problems, and how it was resolved + Cost!

Try and get some understanding of the common faults amoung the models.
