Yes Henry I too had trouble. The water "goosenecks" must be removed to pull off the intake tubes. Studs are always better than bolts...the reason being that bolts tend to stress or "strip" the base object, meaning the head or block. Where studs take most of the stress and stretch as they are stressed. If I had a choice between new gooseneck gaskets, or tightening bolts, I'd choose the gaskets every time. It is much better than the potential alternative. Since what you and I are doing is to be performed every 5 years or 30,000 miles, I thing studs are the way to go. I have had so many requests to write a manual or do the actual work on other's cars, I just can't believe it! I am considering it. But I never forget, if it weren't for the mechanics that give out information for free, I wouldn't be this far. Their advice is absolutely priceless. I wish there was some way to Thank eveyone other than just typed out responses! I really owe you and others a lot for getting as far as I have.

Jeff: Did you have a problem removing the lower intake on numbers 1-3, and 9-12? It seems that water inlet elbows, located next number 3 and 9, didn't give room to lift the intakes off the studs. I'm tempted to replace these studs with bolts......that way it will just slide out.

Do you know if studs are better than bolts?

Way-to-Go Henry !!

That scene looks mighty familiar to me! I painted the top portion of my engine block and heads, and refinished the cam covers today. I'll get some pics and post them tomorrow I'm hoping. The crinkle paint was NO BIG DEAL contrary to what others have been telling me. But perhaps it was just my scientifically advanced method of applying it. A full detailing is nearly as much work as a frame-off resto I did on my old '63 split-window Vette! Right now I feel like I'll never get it done. But taking little steps at a time is the key.
