DGS and others: You came in real late on this. The 'yellow metal compatibility issue' has been totally beaten to death here, as has the syncro gearbox .vs. limited slip diff topic.

Bottom line: RedLine (and some others, but not Mobil 1) is safe, limited slip additive not needed.

Redline 75W-90NS worked great in mine. No additive needed.

Had Amsoil in my '82 GTSi (most of it dripped out over that last 2 years - TAKE CARE of those 'minor' leaks!)and replaced it with Redline NS. The Redline is slightly better, and there is NO cold 2nd gear issue now at all.

I put the Red Line in my 308 QV last spring. The hard second shift when cold went COMPLETELY away. It shifts like a Honda now right after startup.

Peter,
I would be interested to know if the Redline sorts out your gearchange - please let me know.
Who are you dealing with, as far as I know Delta Oil in Grantham are the distributors for Redline (01476-861195)- do not use the shokproof gear oil.

Christopher Gallagher, the tech rep at FNA, told me that Ferrari transaxles contain various yellow metals and you should only use gear oils specifically designed fot this application.

The only ones I know that are yellow metal safe are the gear oils used previously by Ferrari, AGIP, also Redline and of course Shell transaxle gear oil.

I also put Redline 75-90NS in my 80 GTSi. Seems much beeter than the castrol I was using before. I get a little chatter.. but much less than before as well. You can get 75-90NS through www.summitracing.com app $8.00 each

dave, Well, okay. I'm used to thinking in terms of multiple cars. I could either stock the 75WNS and the 75W90, or just the NS plus some additive.

DGS,
So far at least four of us have gone to the Redline 75W90 NS and NOT needed the LSD additive....I believe even the Redline rep said that it "may" be need, but not necessarily...I would recommend not buying the stuff(LSD), because you probably will not need it, and really don't want it, unless absolutely necessary.

The 75W90NS has no additives for limited slip differentials. You don't want them in the gearbox. You do want them in a limited slip differential.

For the 3x8s that share oil between the gearbox and diff in the transaxle, you may want to order the additive separately, and add "to taste". If the rears start chattering (locking diff) under tight corners, add a smidge. Not too much, as the LSD additive interferes with synchro operation.

After hundreds of comments about gear oil in previous threds, it was determined that 308's don't have brass synchros. It's also been determined that the Red Line 75W90 NS is the way to go. In addition to Mike's experience, a friend put it into his 328 and experienced a remarkable improvement as well. I'll be doing mine this Winter

I read somewhere that gear box oils that contain phosphorus will damage the brass synchros. I do not know if Red line countains those chemicals agents in them. I would highly recommend using the Shell high presure gear box fluid which is much lighter than 75w90 gear oil and It makes shifting much easier during warm up. I used it on my late 79 308 GTS and it made a noticable difference.
I bought mine from a local Ferrari dealer and it was costly but well worth it. It is made for these cars and it is far cheaper than replacing synchros. I hope this helps you.

Send it back and get the "right" stuff for your car, and that would be the recommended 75W90NS. It made a night-and-day difference in my '84 QV. I wish I'd know about it years ago.

The gear change on my '85 308GTS QV has always been a bit stiff and I have stopped trying to use 2nd gear altogether. Having read an earlier thread on gearbox oil, I ordered Red Line oil from the UK distributor. We discussed a suitable oil and the agent recommended 75W90NS. However, they delivered Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil. Does anyone have experience of this grade of Red Line - and is it a suitable oil?
