Steven,
Yes you can. Stay with the points but run them as grounds.

Can I replace the Dinoplex unit on my 246 GTS with an MSD unit (optical or magnetic trigger), and still have the option of straight coil ignition if it fails? Won't I be removing the points for this installation? Thanks for any info you may have

Hamlet
Thanks for the advice! The Electromotive unit @ $1500+ is a bit less cost effective than what I was looking for, although I absolutely agree it must be the ultimate.

For my grand touring/reliability/ease of parts and maintenence goals/purposes, Ben's $500 distributor set up with an MSD is proven with other FChat members and about perfect for my specific requirements. My Marelli Microplex has left me single bank stranded 3 times, so I'm a little spooked.

Have checked with my PMO mentors today (they Weber convert 911 w/ Kjets) and they recommend MSD. The key to MSD reliability seems to be to isolate it from heat, so will put it where the old Kjet computer was; will also arrange a quick disconnect feature leaving a straight coil ign. as an option.

Again, many thanks for the email!
best

I would highly recommend going with a DIS Ignition system simply because the accuracy of the DIS Ignition system far exceeds the mechanical centrifugal counter weights and the spark is far more stronger than anything else on the market. I have installed a few of these systems in the past during my Auto repair business years and I tell you, the trottle response is unbelievable and you never have to mess with it again as long as the car is alive. The start up becomes so much easier and
It also make a great deal of improvement on the HC and CO level in your exhust. Lets face it those Webers are great carburators but are not very efficient, you need a DIS system to promote a clean burn which translates into more horsepower and driveability as close to a fuel injection car.
It was well worth the effort for the conversion.
If you are interested I would provide you with the phone # of the place that sells them.
Good luck.
Hamlet.

Was planning on an Multiple Spark Discharge (MSD) 6AL ignition unit when the salesman said that the Mallory HyFire was better as it was digital, higher output and cheaper.
Someone else mentioned that the MSD was more reliable.

Any experience as to which would work better on an optically triggered ignition with an MSD Blaster 2 coil?

Many thanks
