Just found out that it was actually the dipstick bolt that was cross threaded. I left the bolt in place an sealed it with silicone for now.
I emptied out the gearbox oil and just put in 4 ltrs of oil through the filler nut (top) but couldn't check the level.
Am I right to assume that 4 ltrs would have been enough as I can't get work done to fix the cross threaded problem for a few months.
Thanks
Marc

Marc,

way easier to fill through the dipstick hole. Just use a narrow funnel so you have an air break and it fills fine and quickly. It take longer to remove the airbox and get to the filler nut. This nut is really for a dry gearboxes first fill so as to oil the differential. Once it it oiled you never have to go here again. The nut is 17mm no big deal just forget the filler hole. I never fill through the filler hole

Hey Byron,

I'll give the breather/dipstick a try and organize to get the filler re-tapped.
My only problem is the quality of workmanship where I live as these guys are the ones whom buggered up the thread in the first place but kept it very quiet.
I plan to keep the F-car for a while so its for my/cars best interest.

Cheers
Marc

Marc,
I've refilled through the dipstick hole... you just have to hold a funnel w/extensions flush against it and go slowly. It's not impossible...just takes time!

Marc,

No problems - just the time it takes.
When re-tapping the thread in the gearbox casing don't try and tap the thread in one go, have several goes and always put some grease on the tap - this will catch most of the metal filings.

Thanks Malcolm,

I might try the breather, is there any problems with this way, and repairing the thread is an option but I was worried about the metal filings entering the gearbox...
Any suggestions

Marc,
There is no technical reason why you cant fill through the level rod, but it will take ages, an option may be to fill through the breather, which is situated next to the filler plug, but this will also take a long time.
Best thing to do is take some time and remove the damaged plug and repair the gearbox casing thread and fit a new filler plug.

Hi all,

Just tried to change the gearbox oil and found that the filler cap screw has been cross threaded at which the previous owner either forgot to mention or didn't know..
I need to know if there is anyway that I can refill the gearbox oil other than through the filler cap, maybe through the dipstick if possible.
Needs urgent attention.

Thanks
Marc
