Jeff-As taboo as it is to speak of anything "rice" on this board, there are several aftermarket rear air induction systems (similar to what your talking about) currently avaiable for the NSX, MR2, Fiero, etc., advertised in most "ricer" magazines. The ones I have seen have been made out of either fiberglass or carbon fiber and it appears that they could easily be modified to fit the rear deck of an F-car. |

Simply put, not needed. I recently saw this aerodynamic drawing of the TR, as you can see with the hot air coming out of the front of engine bay area combined with the air flow over the car (while moving - in theory at speed), creates a vortex like swirl over the (painted) area of the engine bay cover (which I refer to as the chicklet - like the candy) this forces hot air up and cold air down INTO the air intake area, at least that's the theory. Anyway I found it interesting. If it does what it's designed to do, I doubt anything home grown would improve on it, but that's just my $0.02. -Ben

I'd ask William as he really knows TR's. |

Hi James...I was thinking of a bolt-on type of modification. Just in place of the engine cover, no other changes to the car. I think it would look cool to have two low profile scoops just above the roof line. Maybe I'll have to do a sketch so I can see it more in the flesh. It's just a crazy idea at this point. I figured with so many fcar-knowledgeable people here someone could say they've done it or seen it. You just never know. Hey....am I falling into the rice-burner mode here? |

Jeff IMHO you have a very nice TR. I'd keep it that way. Modifing is a very slippery slope. A modified TR will quickly be worth ZERO unless it is a track car like William's done to the standard he did. |

My TR's air intake track has lots of distance and curves, and can't be that good for performance. I was thinking...I've seen some other exotics take air in at the rear of the roof through scoops, like a drag racer's care has on the hood. I believe I've seen Pcars and Lambos with this kind of set up. Why couldn't someone handy with fabricating fiberglass make a similar set up to go in place of the engine cover? The air could go straight down to the air meters and then do an about face up into the plenums and then into the motor. Getting air from the rear roof area seems like it would have a "ram" effect, helping to get a few more ponies from the engine. I know that rear visibility would suffer. But heck, while driving at night at least I wouldn't be blinded by the truck behind me with his aircraft landing lights on! What do you guys think? Stupid idea? |
