Allan,

Good to see you here! Thanks so much for the offer but I found a used part with the spline. I haven't even plugged the machine in yet, will go out and clean it up today, so I dont want to get to far ahead of myself!

Robert,

The tube could be quite a bit smaller than 0.75" in diameter if need be. I can't really tell from the picture how big the chuck is.

Hi Robert, I haven't conversed with you in a long time. What diameter can the 3 jaw chuck hold? The shaft of the distributor is about 0.4685" around the splines (Just measured it with my caliper and my 1977 308 distributor). It would be fairly easy to take a piece of aluminum rod, say 0.750" x 1.000" or so (If your 3 jaw chuck can open that wide), make it into a tube by boring it out for a slip fit over the splines and then slice the tube lengthwise down one side (Not completely in half). The slit in the side of the tube will allow the 3 jaw chuck to compress the tube ever so slightly around the splines when you crank down on the chuck. Since aluminum is relative soft, you risk no damage to the splines and it should grip the distributor shaft firmly. It should also come off fairly easy too.

Thats pretty much how we chuck things in a lathe when we are worried about messing up the teeth in pinion wire (bar gear stock) when we don't have the correct size collet.

If you would like, I have some free time this weekend and could try and make one for you in the small machine shop that I run. Let me know if you'd like me to do this for you. Just tell me what range of diameter your chuck will accept. I could test the fit on my distributor (1977 308 gtb) and take pictures if you'd like.

Regards,
Alan Ing

Mike of course we can compare notes, e-mail me offline with your number I would like to talk.

I found out from FerrariList:

if I understand correctly what you are planning, you don't need a camshaft,
but you need part no.: 108005, which connects the distributor with the
camshaft, because the spline isn't inside the camshaft, but inside part
108005. Do you have the factory service bulletin no. #321 / June 1977 ?
There's a sectional drawing which shows what I'm trying to describe.

It's also in FORZA No. 23 June 2000 'Shop Talk
with Tony'.

I just bought the same distributor machine on eBay for $100. Not in as good a shape as yours but I plan on completely rebuilding/rewiring it. Can I contact you off-board to share notes on getting it to work?

I built a homemade distributor machine several years back using a sewing machine motor and some electonics I built (very accurate digital rpm readout), and I will be adapting some of those pieces to the Allen. For driving the distributor I used a piece of clear plastic hose which was a tight fit on the shaft. If you can't get the camshaft end you might want to try clamping a piece of 1/2" round stock in the chuck, and force a length of hose on it. Kind of a flexible coupling. Another thing that might work is just to protect the distributor shaft with the hose and clamp the whole thing in the chuck.

Contact me off list if you wnat ot share notes.

Would check with Bill at GT Car Parts.

That is going to be one handy little device. I gotta start looking for one of those - just because it is so cool.

I recently purchased a allen distributor machine. I am looking for a bent or busted early 75-76 308 camshaft so that I can cut off the end and use the spline end to attach to the distributor to put in the 3 jaw chuck.

I will pay a reasonable price if anyone has one or maybe trade for something I have?

Rob
