I put the Sony XR-C510RDS head unit and Sony T60 CD changer out of my old 911 into the Ferrari. The unit is mid-1990's and matches the interior far better than the current stock of all-singing, all-dancing silver graphic display panels. The radio works fine but the CD changer in the rear trunk only works well on really smooth stretches of highway - every slight jolt from the road surface causes the disk to skip. Maybe the unit is too close to the rear suspension - or maybe Ferrari feel the car makes its own music... |

It was one of the first, Alan. I have some R&Ts from that time. Advertisements listed that model at $450. Manual tuning. I kinda like it. There was an electronic tuning Blaupunkt model at that time (1976) that listed for $650. |

Yea, that's the one! My friend wanted to know why I had a $50 radio in a $100K car. He was a little off on those numbers, but that cassette was state of the art in it's day. |

Right. They came from the factory wired for radio installation by the dealer with the cover plate that Philip described. The original Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette is still in my car. No pushbuttons. Barry |

They left the dealers to install the radio of the customer's choice. Just like the mirrors. |

Did the 308 even come with a radio from the factory or were they all dealer installed ? |

Blaupunkt was stock in a lot of cases, but haven't heard a lot of good things about the line lately. I've got one of their CD players recently to swap out with a cassette unit currently installed in my car. I've read of some marine stereo applications using planer type speakers. Any info on this? I was thinking they would slide behind the seats and avoid the visual clutter of the rear deck location. |

Hi Guys, thanks for the tips. The car actually has pretty decent pioneer speaker already installed. I'm not expecting it to sound like my home theatre, I just want to be able to pop in a CD. (Currently there is a Clarion cassette deck which would be OK in a pinch but the deck is busted!) I'm going to get an mp3 playing unit so I can have about 100 songs on a CD. A lot easier than a CD changer. Thanks for the tip on the Honda Accord compatibility, I'll just use that as my search criteria! You guys are great, thanks! Jonathan

Jonathan, We a budget of around $250, you should be able to put a nice deck and speakers in your car. Check specs on low frequency response of the 5.25" speakers, since bass is what is most lacking in that size. Find the best you can, and call and talk to one of their tech guys for recommendations. Any of you guys have the brushed aluminum cover used when the radio isn't used? I have a Honda unit in my car (radio/CD). Works fine. Put some decent speakers in too. Never use it. And, anyway, it is too damn loud with the cams/Tubi/big venturis to hear anything. |

Agree with the comments here. 5.25" speakers in the doors. PO of my car installed these great Optimus (radio shack, I know--but they rock) SURFACE mount 4" or 5" speakers on the deck near the rear quarterpanel louvred windows. Four speakers makes a great difference. I'm running a Pioneer DEH-P4500MP unit now, looks and sounds great. You'll need to get a power & ground wire, and hook up the antenna input and power lead, and all the basic stuff (say... they don't seem to make direct wiring harnesses for Ferraris!). Not too difficult to do, even for a novice. The new mid to high end units have enough built in power to drive our two or four speakers adequately (an amp will always deliver clearer sound, mind you, but not necessary for our application, and difficult to realize).

Pretty much they all fit, and you don't need to spend a lot to get a nice sounding unit. I bought my last Kenwood on Ebay (brand new) for about $125 delivered. Amazing capabilities with dual pre-amp outputs, remote control and a built in electronic equalizer! The limiting factor is the speaker openings in the doors. You can only fit a 5.25" speaker. |

Any standard size will fit. If you're looking at Crutchfield, it's a size "E". That's standard euro DIN. If it fits a 1986 Honda Accord, it will fit your Ferrari 308! When I upgraded my 308QV's stereo to an MP3/CD player (a Pioneer), I took my old one and put it in my daughter's Honda, no adapter necessary, just a different wiring harness.

Hi Guys, The crappy 1980's aftermarket radio in my '77 308 has to go. I'm putting in a decent CD player in dash unit. Are there any limitations on what will fit? Is there a way to cross reference somwhere what models will fit? I'm clueless where to start. Crutchfield has like 2,000 radios! Thanks. Jonathan P.S. I checked the archives and came up empty. |
