Be careful on these 512TR's/348's/355's that the Alt rebuild shop uses the Heavy Duty (special) Regulator. Otherwise you may end up with a flashing dash bulb or check engine light. The puters seem to be hungry for a specific type of sine wave from the alt/reg. |

OK, so it looks fairly simple to do. Pull the grill off the top behind the deck lid, loosen the belt and (BTW< is this a serpentine belt? looks like the A/C is same belt since it is inside out) remove the alternator. How do you go about keeping the belt on the other pullies or getting the belt back on without having to drop the engine? Any tricks to this job before I end up getting into some kind of quagmire? |

Jim, Based of the voltage readings...the alternator is not charging enough, hence the warning lamp is on. I'm with Ernie on this one..take it off, and have it rebuilt. Really, no big deal...The voltage regulator is either built-in, or attached to the back of the alternator. Absolutely no need to spend more than $100-$150 tops to have yours rebuilt... I'm still running the orginal (Bosch) alternator on my 30 year old BB...It's been rebuilt twice...very inexpensively. Regards, David |

Jim have you checked the connections to make sure that they are clean and on properly? If all else fails just take it to any reputable alternator shop and have it rebuilt for about $50-$100. $650 is waisted money on a new alternator. |

More details: Just turned 10K miles on car ('91 TR). Checking voltage at battery: At rest, ingition off, 11.95 volts. Running at idle, 11.70 volts. At 2000+ rpm, when light goes on, 11.93 volts. Any chance there are bushings in the alternator that can be replaced (ala Carrera)? or a stand alone voltage regulator that could be going out? I don't want to jump at the alternator since it looks like a $650+ price tag. Surely this is a common problem, eh? |

Jim, Other than checking the obvious, such as: Battery connections Ground connections And loose alternator belt(s).... My money...OK, your money should be on the alternator. Regards, David |
