The other alternative is to have a pair of engine stands like the run of the mill one I have. Buy a square steel channel the same dimensions as the third leg around 4 feet long (shorten as required) You join the 2 stands at the bottom by replacing the 3rd leg and wheel with the square tube bolting into the base of each stand so they face each other. Next you make 4 brackets to attach to the motor mounts or the holes the mounts bolt to. the engine stands would then be bolted to the sides of the engine and gearbox rather than the rear like I did. That works well if you dont want to seperate the engine from the gearbox to, say, replace syncros. |

Newman Thanks for the thoughts. Looks like you bolted the stand onto the bellhousing. is there a way to mount the motor to the stand w/o removing the bellhousing? Philip |

front header MUST come off prior to lifting out and even though the factory installs the engine with the a/c compressior on, I tried and couldnt so I took it back off to install the assembly. The straps worked wonderfully. Ive done it with chains like you described but the straps worked best and this allowed for the perfect angle needed to clear the engine compartment. |

Winter Project. I have searched the archives on this. There is useful material on how to remove the engine from the car, including a write up by Ed Gault on using the front intake studs for the cherry picker chain which enables the motor to swing just the right amount to clear the rear window. I think I understand how to do this but any links/pictures etc, please email me offline. My question is the engine stand to use and where the stand connects to the engine block (to enable it to be rotated 180 degrees ("upside down"). Can anyone that's done this advise on where and how to attach a mounting plate to the block? All inputs appreciated |
