That is a scary though Mitch. Luck, Karma, yeah I guess. I like to call it blessed. What ever the case I'm glad I caught that, cause it would have been one bad senario. |

Let's assume that you did install the washer in the first place, and therefore had no reason to go back and look. Under that scenario, how would one find out about the crack? Is it just luck? |

I have been doing the engine out major service on my 348 by my self. For the most part everything has been going just fine. Now I'm at the stage of putting every thing back together. I had just pressed on the new idler bearing and noticed that I forgot to put the washer on. I was thinking "Ah I'll just leave it off", but then said to myself "No, I have been doing things the right way, and I should keep it that way." Well I'm pulling the bearing off and notice that the bracket that it is pressed in has moved. So I release the pressure on the puller and look under the bracket. OH NO!!! No, no, no, no, no, I couldn't be seeing what I saw. It was a CRACK in the bracket that holds the bearing in place against the engine. So I loosened the bolts to see how bad it was, and it fell off. It had broken in two, right were the bolts holes were. The only thing that was keeping it together was the pressure from the bolt holding it down. It is a good thing for me that I didn't let something as small as a washer get by. If I had let that go and then put everything back together, all it would have taken would have been one good romp on the peddal and KABOOOOOM!!! The belt would have come off the pistons and valves would have hit and granaded the motor. So kids, the moral of this story is "If you are gonna do something, do it right." Especially when it comes to working on your Ferrari. You never know what little thing you will catch that will save your butt. |
