Hi William.

Congrats on the new F car.

Remember, all the hard-to-find parts are all under one roof here at Ferrari UK and can be ordered online at www.owners.ferrari.com once registered.

Shop online and we ship to the 'States overnight for as little as $18.

Enjoy the car !

Cheers.

And by the way - on a '86 328, only the driver door locks both doors with the key.
The pax door locking actuator is only a slave and cannot
activate the driver lock.
Only on later cars the locking mechanism works both ways.

Speedometer thing is most likely the speedo sender.
Quite common problem.
It is easy to change yourself with right rear wheel and wheel liner removed.

Ref. my earlier post on removal of the inner door panel: I forgot to mention
that the window actuator switch(es) of course also need to be removed
and unplugged.
The switches and the wiring plugs ar colourcoded with matching dots of paint.
Remember to notice how the wires run in the space behind.

Gentlemen,
Thank you so much for the thoughtful help. I went out this morning and now the door handles work just fine. I drove around town for a couple of hours and when I got back, it 's the same problem with just the driver door outside latch now not working. (Before it was both pax and driver outside latches.)

I now have noticed that when I use the key to lock the doors the pax door does not lock, but the manual says it should! So maybe I have an electrical problem, I don't know. The car used to have an Alpine Alarm that was removed a couple of year ago, who knows if they messed up the door putting it in out taking it out.

It has to go for a smog cert on Monday, I just may let Carl at Blackhorse, here in LA, figure it out. He is supposed to be a very sharp guy.

But thanks again. Having all this support from real Ferrari guys is very comforting.

Oh, let me not forget. I parked the car and went into a store for 30 minutes. When I came back out the Speedometer was not working!! It doesn't seem to have a fuse listed in the owner's manual, so now I have another thing to sort out.

If you need I have pictorial (step-by-step) of door panel removal. Haven't needed to dissasemble door handle mechanism (yet!) but once door panel is off easily accessed.

William,
These are great instructions from Kurt..if you are at all handy, you can do this...it looks more danting than it really is. I have had both my door panels off on at least two occaisions, once to trace a bad wire to the window motors, another time (more recently) to upgrade the door speakers...I might add to have a small peice of carpet or large towel to rest the door panel on to prevent scratching the leather.

Congratulations with your car - you will enjoy.

First, if under guarantee, take it to the dealer.
If not try this:

You will need to take the inner door side off the door.
From memory (I am not home):

- find and remove the little screws sunken into the "carpet"part of the door side
- carefully lift out the the mirror switch, disconnect
- remove the flat part of the inside door unlock grip (2 screws)
- remove the curved cover behind that (2 screws)
- unhook the door lock cable coming into sight (don't loose the little locking thing)
- remove flat end cover at the very front of armrest assembly (2 small philips screws)
- remove lamp from under the front of armrest(can be pressed out from inside), disconnect
- uncrew the black inside doorlock plastic doofer sticking up at the rear of the door (I don't know its real name)
- unscrew 3 big screws (Philips head), 2 from the armrest and one trough the hole where the mirrorswitch was
- Take a good look at the wires coming out of the door to the mirrorswitch and lamp, they should go back in the same way to avoid interference with the door lockin mechanism/cable
- lift entire doorside clear of upper coaming and lock wire at the rear.
- remove plastic barrier carefully - if not previously disturbed it should go back witout new glue.
Now you can see and access the outer door handle from the inside. It probably needs some penetrating oil and some massage to get back to life.
Reassembly is the reverse. Expect a little difficulty fitting the wires back into the armrest/doorhandle. Otherwise no problem.
No special tools needed.

I hope this helps you , have a good time.

brgds Kurt

Hi guys. I made the leap and bought a 1986 328 GTS to day. The drivers door handle on the outside doesn't want to play. It seems frozen in place. The inside handle works just fine. Anybody got an idea before I take it to a mechanic. Thanks.
