While you have the pads out another trick is to chamfer the leading and trailing edges of the brake pads. 1/8" at a 45 degree angle is all you need and this can be done with a file or bench grinder. This is an old school technique that works really well at getting rid of brake squeal. In addition to this Wurth makes a really good product that you spray on the backing plates of the pads. It almost glues the pads in place and gets rid of the vibrations that cause brake squeal. Good luck with it. |

Hubert et all, Thanks for the information. I am going to have the pads removed and "gelled up" and see how that works. The squeal is definitely the high pitched variety...which is most disconcerting when stopping at a red light. If adding the gel still doesn't help then I will try different pads. I really appreciate all the advice - you guys are a real help!!! |

Rob: both surface can make noise. the interface b/w the pad backing and shim, and the actual pad against the rotor; however, most "street" pads should not generate any pad/rotor noise. So, if you've got a squeal from the back, try and lube up the shim/pad backing interface with anti-squeal. -hubert |

Hmm, since I replaced my rear brake pads on the 328 they've been sqeeling. I did use the OEM pads. I just thought it came with the territory, but now I wonder. Hubert, I didn't use anything on the back of the pads. Is that where you put the anti-sqeel? I find that hard to believe as I would think the only place a squeel would come from is the pad to rotor surface. |

David: what kind of 'squeal' is it? Is it a high-pitched nails against chalk board type, or a lower sort of hum? If it's the former, it may simply be that the anti-squeal between the pad backing and shim has broken down, and is allowing movement under piston pressure; simplest thing to do would be to un-pack the pads, re-apply a coat of anti-squeal between the pad backing and the face of the shim that comes in contact with the backing (concentrate on areas where the pistons touch the shim and on the peripheral edges of the pad) , and see if that helps alleviate the problem. If it's the later type of hummed squeal, then it's a function of the pad compound; for what it's worth, I run cobalt spec vr pads at the track, and they're a full race compound, and yet they hardly make any noise. You may want to give them a try, if the steps I mentioned above don't help. |

I used to have squeeling brakes on all the sports cars I owned; UNLESS i drove them like grandma from the beginning of the brake pads life, or Ran the snot out of them constantly AND continuously. I haven't had any squeel for over a year, but then I've been taking the car to the track and running the snot out of it once a month. While I am only geting 5 track days on a set of pads, I can inform you that they never squeel. Probably has something to do with wearing through the pads at a rate faster than the glasing can buildup. I am currently using DS2500s--they take a lot of heat, are rotor friendly, not as much dust as std Ferrari pads, and less than 1/3rd the cost. |

if you have FHP brakes, the story is apparently that they squeak and that's that. sorry! doody. |

Doody, Thanks for the info. Actually my 99 does have FHP brakes - maybe it is because it is a Euro and not the US model. I believe that it was released in Europa before it was available in USA. The car currently has about 8K miles on it. Should the squealing not have subsided by now? Thanks again for all the info. |

i'm pretty sure that the FHP was not available (at least in NA) until MY 00 cars, so it is unlikely you have FHP brakes. my 99 also squealed terribly (especially when stopping slowly and at slower speeds - ie: "around town" when you'd notice the noise most). in my case, after about 1K miles it calmed down. doody. |

Dave, Thanks for the info. Is there anywhere that you recommend for buying the Ferodo DS2500 brake pads? Thanks. |

Fiorano equipped 550's have essentially race-compound brake pads. By their very nature, these types of brake pads squeal. You can take the pads out & put some anti-squeal goop in & then put you rpads back in...but that will only last for a little while. Or, you can change pads back to a more street or hybrid street-track pad that doesn't squeal. I recommend the Ferodo DS2500...and don't but them from your dealer (there is a ~~800% markup on brake pads from the dealer network). |

Just got my first Ferrari - 99 550. Love it to death but the brakes are really aggravating me - they squeal terribly. I had the car checked out thoroughly by Shelton Ferrari prior to buying the car and they said that the brakes were fine (checked the pads, fluid etc). I have read that noisy brakes are part of the deal, especially on 550's with the Fiorano Handling Package. Should I be worried about the noise and is there anything that can be done to lessen it? Any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated. |
