I have to come to the defence of Phil here who has given me some excellent advice over the past few months and even offered to come to the UK to fix my car!! I suppose he thinks if your on a technical forum one should know where the engine is situated and at least a basic way of being able to expain symptoms. If you cant do that why come on here!! just take it to a dealer! |

"Mitch - had to laugh when I read your post..re: 4mph at redline. " Perhaps I worded my statement to include things I might not have wanted to include. Let me try this again: Speed at redline in 3rd gear was 98 MPH with 265/40ZR18s but was only 94 MPH with 265/35ZR18s. The difference between 98 and 94 is 4 MPH, and this can be attributed directly to the rolling radius/diameter of the tires. |

Ed - I'll take mine out today if it stops raining and tell you what 3rd gear is at 3500...we've had tropical downpours for the last 5 days... I'm pretty sure that in 4th at 4000 it is exactly 100mph, which I think is 160km/hour? Mitch - had to laugh when I read your post..re: 4mph at redline. My girlfriend is always on my case to get glasses cause I can't read if the speedo is 60 or 90...yet you can read 4mph... Matt makes an excellent point..when was the car fully serviced? How old are the plugs, filter, etc? What is unusual is the 355 really kicks at higher rpms, the 550 has bottom end torque, but you should really feel a "wallop" when you punch it. Someting diffently not right here....

Gees, I'm upsetting people all over the place. I found the question hilarious, not idiotic. Maybe I phrased my reply badly, but it was not meant as a dig. My point about inadequate explanation still stands though. Sorry for the confusion. |

I think Steve may be on to something, another "obvious " yet often overlooked is the air filter element. Worth a look, IMO. Try removeing it for a short run and see if it makes a differance. Cheap test to find out! |

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments. Mitch, I use stock 265ZR18 for my rear tyres so it doesn't sound like a problem with the tyres. Steve, I guess another way to describe the problem is that I feel the engine is not very responsive at higher RPM. Somehow I think the car ought to accelerate faster, but may be I'm just too demanding (have been driving a 550 for a few days and that may have raised my expectation). Perhaps the way to resolve the mistery is to have some feedback from you guys as to what speed your 355 travels at if you're in 3rd gear and doing 4,500 RPMs. Richelson, I appreciate the support and have taken the decision to ignore people like Phil. |

Ed: What size rear tires do you have? Stock is 265/40Zr18. I had a set of 265/35ZR16s and lost a noticible amount of velocity (per RPM). But in any event, it was only 4 MPH in 3rd at redline. There are lots of 265/35 tires around, and precious few 265/40s. I end up using 275/40 Bridgestone S03s at the rear as the closest fit with maxperformance rubber. If you feel the engine is "down on poke" have it compression and leak down tested. If these look good, begin further diagnosis with ignition and fueling systems. |

Ed -- I had the same sort of question. Is your problem a change in the apparent RPM-to-speed behavior per Frank's post (yet the engine runs strong), or is it more that the engine just feels somewhat lethargic at higher RPM (yet still idles well/normal-ish)?. "Blockage" and "cylinder" don't really go together , but "blockage" and "exhaust" might if you still got cats somewhere (melted matrix, fractured matrix chucks floating about, etc.). Anyway, give more description. |

Ed - There are a lot of good, knowledgable and helpfull people here. Usually, the fixed speed at a fixed rpm is preset by the gearing and does not change as a result of an engine problem. The only exception I can think of (and I'm not a mechanic) is that under heavy acceleration if the rpm is high and the speed is low then the clutch may be slipping. You will notice that when you "floor it" and the engine revs but the car does not leap forward. However, it should not be slipping under a normal load at constant speed. Additionally - if the engine performs well in all the other gears, then you can rule out an engine problem... I'm sure others will jump in if you can provide more specific information. |

Damn Phil another nice way to ask for a better description. Why not just ask for a clearer description? The issue that pisses me off is that because you have some knowledge on repairing these vehicles you are a complete arrogant to others. Why? IMO this makes for a deadbeat. I don't put others down or talk condescending to them in my profession. Give them and inch and they take a yard. Are you even educated beyond highschool. Good post. Solved his problem. |

What on gods green earth is a "blocked cylinder"??? Have you jammed ball bearings down the air intake or something??? Your self diagnosis is inadequate to give any sensible comment to. Have another stab at the symptoms you are feeling, and the conditions that caused it, and we'll help with the diagnosis for you!! |

My 355 no longer seems to go as fast as it did. Is there a way to ascertain whether one of the cylinders is blocked? I have a 6 speed and when in 3rd gear with engine at 4,500 revs, the car travels at a speed of around 90km/hour. Does this sound normal? |
