thanks to all who offered advice here.

first...NO SMELL.. see new post

second.. sounds great and i think there is more pep at higher RPM (4-5) than before. totaly pleased with the whole thing..

did not realize the difference in sound until i passed under the 6 lane freeway in second gear after a light. awesome... i may need a moment here... ok, i'm ready to continue. the job took me about five hours total. i recommend for those wishing to do this that removing the entire airbox to facilitate room to work is best. i did, and it really helped to make room to see and work.

be carful of the donuts when removing them! i was ok, but one of them was in a VERY delicate condition. one was stuck for a moment, but i gave it a little shot of liquid wrench, let it sit, and then 10 minutes later it came right off.

all in all, simple mechanical skills, some basic hand tools, a little time and patience, and anyone can do this.

thanks, and see the other post. i had some additional questions

James,
Taking my time about an 1.5hrs. It's pretty easy once you get the brackets figured out.
Good Luck!

thanks a lot for the information. i will post a new update to let you guys know abot the smell. so, as a benchmark...i would say that i have little to no smell now. i moved here to NC recently, and until my house was built, i kept the car in a u-store shed. i always disconnected the battery as a safety precaution and so i know the smell from letting the car idle in the unit to reset the ECUs. that will be my baseline, and i will let you know the "after" result.

thanks again. now, if i can just find my tools....

James - It took me about 3 hours to put my test pipes on so I'd say you've got a good 2-3 hour job. There are 2 bolts on each CAT you'll have to remove. If you don't have trouble getting them off then you're home free pretty much. Mine were a pain in the @ss !!

Mark - mine has a strong exhaust smell also. I can't say that it is real "gassy" though. I will say that my clothes smell after driving with top down for extended period of time...

Mark is dead on about the tubi / test pipe combo.
INCREDIBLE!!!! If youo're behind me in a tunnel
or overpass when I hit 6000rpm ..... Well, you might be looking for a new windshield.

The Tubi on my '90ts bolted right in without revising the factory brackets. I think I remember Jim's install as being different from mine, and suspected that he might have had a spider or challenge exhaust. Either way follow his steps, and it shouldn't be any trouble at all.

The sound of a 348 with Tubi and test pipes is INCREDIBLE, especially underpasses. The sound, to me, blows away my 550.

I would like to know how stinky your car becomes. I still think I have an overrich condition that is more than just the missing cat. Especially at idle mine smells very gassy.

Good luck, enjoy the sound, and let me know about the smell.

James,
I just put a tubi system on my 348ts 1990 (no test pipes). The sound is very cool and you will notice some performance gain too.
To install:
1. Remove the existing heat shield(s) I had just one.
2. Loosen up the cats at the mamifold so you can work and align the system easier.
3. Unbolt the cats at the factory muffler.
4. Unbolt at the cross member (black bar).
5. Drop out, remove the cross member.
6. Use the same exhaust donuts on the tubi.
7. The support exhaust brackets (bracket with spring)get rotated so the 2 bolts that were in the frame now get bolted to the Tubi and the 4 bolts get fixed to the frame (see photo).
8. Hook up the cats or test pipes snug the tubi/cat connections and cats to manifold.
9. Look at the exhaust pipes from the back of the car to see if the spacing is ok in relation to the body. If so tighen up, install heat shields, done. If not move things around until centered.

Good luck.
