Hi I see. Over here in the UK any car which is pre 1993 (K reg) it is not required to have a cat fitted to pass our tests |

I wish I could run with straight pipes, but in my state they visually check for the presense of the catalytic converters ... in addition to testing for hydrocarbons, etc. |

Hi Guys Why not just remove the cats altogether? I did in my Mondial T. You get and extra 10-15 bhp too! Thanks Steve |

The Random Technology catalysts were built using the specs I gave them (I was their first Mondial T). They bolted in perfectly except that the port for the thermocouple had to be reamed out a bit because the inside diameter was a bit too small. I think that was the only dimension I hadn't given them in advance. Gearbox ... long story but it's great now. I had it all appart and started sourcing parts. Wanted to replace all bearings as it seemed that a bearing failure had been the start of my problem, plus of course needed to replace the bevel gears that had lost teeth and a few other bits and pieces. While trying to source parts I ran across FerrariPartsExchange who told me they could find a used gearbox for less than all my parts. Having had tried through other sources for many months before deciding to tackle the dismantling myself, I was very doubtful. Especially since I was insistant on a late-run gearbox so as to pick up the bulk of the upgrades that were done over the 348/Mondial lifetime. Brian & Lyle came through with a gearbox from a wrecked '94 348 with low miles. Everything looked very good in the gearbox and it was 25% cheaper than my parts list. The only problem was that my old box had the two side trans mounts from the 4-point system, whereas this other box had the big single top hanger mount. Luckily the case still retained the bosses where the side mount bolts in, just needed to be drilled and tapped. I brought it to a local shop so they could also weld a bracket on the subframe to make use of the hanging mount for extra stability. Thanks for all your past advice for dismantling the old gearbox. I would not have figured it out on my own. Car is running great. Don't even have the traditional cold shift trouble in 2nd. I'm thinking of converting the old gearbox into a coffee table ... just need to reassemble all the old pieces and build a glass case. |

Hi Lou, Longtime no hear. Did random tech have a direct bolt in that would fit? Did you have to modify? Your Pal in Ca. Hows the gearbox? |

The catalytic converters are the same for US versions of both cars. I purchased a pair of high-flow cats from http://www.randomtechnology.com/ a few years ago. For the headers, I believe the parts books show them being the same (same part numbers). I'm confused though because it indicates that US versions do not have plugged ports for "CO suction" yet my US Mondial-T definitely has the plugs. Nonetheless, it seems that whichever type you have it seems there is an equivalent for the 348. |

I have a couple of questions: Does anyone know if the Mondial T cats and headers are the same as the 348? Does anybody know of high flow cats for these cars and do they make a difference? |
