Agree with Steve M. on all points. I run the Valvoline Synpower Dot 4 (Says "Safe for ABS", brown-grey bottle). By far best value (dollars per boiling point degree, w/ availability factored in). Available at pep boys.

Do a search on "synpower" and you should get ~10 previous brake fluid threads that have a lot of good data/comments. You didn't state your intended use, but for just normal street use I've been pleased with the Valvoline SynPower DOT 3/4 and think it's a good $/performance value. |

"ATE Super Blue DOT 4 is the best for street and track events. " ATE super Blue/Gold is the best $12/pt fluid you can use at the track. If you boil ATE-SB fluid, you are going to need the Castrol synthetic stuff at $70/pt--or more cooling |

Mike, I use the coolant sold by BMW as their brand. I don't know who makes it but I have been well pleased with it over the years. It cost $15 a gallon and is blue in color. P.S. Rob , it was a joke moron ! |

Frank, Here's a quarter...Buy a clue. DJ is speaking of the cooling system, not the brakes. Duh! Regards, Spanky |

Spasso, I've never heard of using coolant in a brake system ? Does that help the brakes run cooler ? |

I always ran 50/50 water and Ethylene Glycol (green anti-freeze)but after reading a number of threads here on Fchat I settled on 20% Ethylene Glycol and 80% filtered/distilled water and one quart of '40 Below' brand water wetter. This produced a noticable improvement in the efficiencey of the cooling system on hot days. 1978 308 GTS DJ |

You must use the spec'd fluid in the manual. The only exception is that you can use DOT 4 Plus instead of plain DOT 4. Even then I am not positive. Systems, seals are very very specific. DOT 4 Plus is higher temperature. The actual brand name is less important. aehaas |

ATE Super Blue DOT 4 is the best for street and track events. You do not want silicon brake fluid in a street car unless your car specifically calls for it. |

I have a 79 308 carbed. I need to flush and replace the brake fluid. What do you recommend as brakes' fluid? DOT 4 or 5? Advantage of silicone? I hear bad things about it on older cars... Also, what do you recommend for coolant liguid? mixture, or specific brand, and where to get it (O'reilly?)? Thanks! |
