Thanks for the input. I will check function of pressure guage and go from there. Jim |

My TR never goes above 90psi even on the track. |

Jim, I would do what Lou B says first. I just drove my TR (1990) tonight - same set up as yours -- for 100+ miles. In 3rd gear I have a reading of 85 PSI at 3000 rpms and at 100 mph at 6750 in 3rd still -- it reads 100 PSI. Stabilizes at 100 PSI at 5500 rpms and does not go higher than that. Checked 2nd gear - 80 mph at 6800 rpms - oil psi 100 stable. I use Valvoline 20W50 Racing oil. Given this data I would say 120 is high - In fact I have never seen 120 and I have had the car redlined in 4th at 130 and I do recall being only a coulple needle widths above 85 -- just like I was tonight. I will investigate the oil pressure further, to see if I can adjust the high end only. It runs fine up to 6K and I don't want it to go lower throughout the range. Thanks for the input. Jim |

My TR read high oil pressure until I changed the sensor. They apparently get varnished or contaminated and read high. I would check that first. |

The oil pressure is (or should be) adjustable. It is on my 328. I noticed I was running over 120psi on my gauge at 6k+ rpms, and that is not right. The manual says 92psi max at 6k. So my mechanic put a mechanical gauge on to confirm the pressures (my dash gauge reads maybe 5psi high we found), and adjusted the pressure via swapping springs or something. Now it seems about right, I might read no higher than 95 to 100psi or so on my gauge, hard to be super accurate with the dash gauge. |

Frank, the OM just lists the recommended range of 65-92.5 PSI, not at a specific RPM, but Vince has some numbers. I switched to 10W40 Syntec and it is performing virtually identical to the 15W50 (range= 40-120). Car runs at usual temps (195-220) I wonder if it is the new filter (which is stock brand and number), which perhaps is not good. Thanks for the input. I will continue to investigate. Jim |

Jim, High viscosity oil pressure indicates high resistance to flow (and lost HP). High resistance to flow induces low flow rates. Low flow rates can cause spun bearings. Therefore: excess viscosity can cause spun bearings (Though I would not call 15w-50 'excess' IF hot) If your car tracks at such high oil temperatures that these viscous oils are needed to maintain pressure - I'd recommend looking at additional oil cooling instead of viscosity. The TR manual says 'normal' is: 10w-40 viscosity 6000 rpm 80 psi pressure 212 deg. F In my experience, much more than 'about' 12 to 14psi per 1000 rpm is a waste of HP and potentially damaging (assuming 'street' motor clearances). Personally, I've opted for the 'other' way (street driving - cool climate) and use 0w-40 Mobil 1. Do wish Mobil 1 made a 10w-40. If in a warmer climate, I would switch brands in order to get a true 10w-40 synthetic. Rgds, Vince

My F355 (yes I know this ia thread about BBs) has 100-105 PSI at normal street driving anywhere above 2500 RPMs on 20W50 and 10W40; and 45-50 PSI at idle. At the track, after a hot lapping session and the oil temp of 265-280 I see 90-95 PSI 5000-8500, and 35 PSI at idle. |

I believe the recommended pressure range is at a certain RPM isn't it ? So, you would expect a higher pressure as you increase RPM above that set figure. |

Can somebody with TR track experience comment on oil pressures? I put 15W50 Mobil 1 in my car ('91 TR) and it now runs outside the recommended range of 65-92.5, even if I run a couple qts low. I am seeing almost 120 at over 6K revs, and below 50 at idle. Input would be appreciated. I don't want to blow any seals. Thanks, Jim |
