I use lumber if I'm gonna be under the car. Jack stands are notorious for falling over all at once. Lumber is soft on the car, leave no marks, and stable. 12x12 etc.

Dave,
That's what I was worried about, because it really seemed like the aft jacks were supporting all the weight, but I didn't see another secure/factory mounting point. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll go fix that ASAP!

Btw, I'm an engineer as well.

I would not use the aft jack points on the car because they are too close to the center of gravity of the car with the engine sub-frame installed. In effect those points will pick up 80-90% of the support punch load. Look at the two bolts in the fore-ground of the photo and jack from that fitting. That will distribute the weight approximately 50/50 front and rear. Those fittings and the front support will be bearing approximately 750 pounds a piece - which is not a significant load for that structure. By spreading the support this way there is an insignificant fore and aft bending moment.

Joseph and Dave,
I greatly appreciate your recommendations.

Do you think the chassis will bend or sag over the course of several months if I use the factory jack points? That is what I am MOST worried about, because those four locations are where I placed the jack stands that are currently supporting the car's entire weight.

Thank you for your help.

A few general rules I was told by my dealer:

Do not jack the car by the transmission (under the engine)

Do not jack the car by the rear most cross member (will bend)

You may jack the car by the large castings on either side of the clutch cover, but do not use a jack stand there

There is a good place to place the jack stand a bit further inboard of the rear jacking point on the steel subframe just ahead of the engine

Jacking up the front, as you have found out, is tricky. I can only manage to jack up one side at a time.

Please be careful (first for yourself, second comes the car)

Correction to my last post!!! I use the cross-member aft of the the one used in the picture and I jack from the bolts that are in the forground of the picture.

I have a center post hoist from a '59 Standard Station in my garage. I routenely jack the car to wash/polish/change oil etc. I'm a mechanical engineer if that counts for anything and I would not jack the car as shown in the picture. I use the same rear cross-member but I DO-NOT put it in bending. I place short 2x4s at the attach point of this cross member. I use smaller pieces of wood to fit in the forward jackpoints to support the front. I never allow metal to metal contact between the lift and the structure of the car.

Where are the best locations to place the jack stands on a 355, taking into account that the car will be on them all winter?

I stored my 355 on jackstands and used the factory jack points between the front and rear wheel under the rocker panels. This may be fine temporarily, but it doesn't look all that safe for extended periods of time, because the rear jack stands are forward of the entire engine compartment.

I was looking through some past threads for jacking points on a 355, and noticed a thread where Rob Lay used a cross support by the engine: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/267926.html
Is this location good? Will it harm or damage the brace?

Also, when jacking up the car, if not side to side, where the heck do you place the jack if you do front only or back only? Most of the undercarriage is covered in fiberglass, so I don't want to bend or break anything.

I'd greatly appreciate any help on this.
David
