After changing all of the plugs and replacing the 2 burnt-through extenders, all's well again. Mark, as always, I think you were right. After changing out the extenders a big improvement occurred--but not 100%. I then changed the plugs and the problem is gone. Those 2 plugs must have glazed, as you said.

Thank you all for the input, as always.

Check the Digiplex connectors too.. if loose (likely, as it's a poor design) it can cause all sorts of difficult-to-diagnose probs. Probs on one bank point to the Digiplex too. Good luck!

Bill-

You did replace all of the extenders and plugs; didn't you?

Bill,
If the car was missing, the plugs in those cylinders almost certainly need to be replaced. With the spark off and the injectors working, the plug will get wet and gas foul. They get a glaze on them and will just not work right again. Change the plugs and it should be perfect again.

Bill - Read the thread '86 328 intermittant hesitation" sound similar. Water in the fuel could possibly cause poor idle.

Well, after a year of near perfect running, I set out for a long trip into New England today and found the car to be misfiring badly. Not being far from home I was able to get back OK.

The first thing I checked was the plugs and extenders. I run NGK 6's and they all looked good ( approx 7k miles on them). However, I found 2 extenders with holes burned through them --both on the front cylinder bank. Ironoically, as of last night, the car has never run better--ultra smooth, full power, etc. It seems odd that 2 extenders would suddenly burn through at the same time. I replaced them and, although the car runs well above idle, I still have a conspicuous , erratic miss at idle now. I should note that the last thing I did last night was to fill up the gas tank. The car ran fine all the way home until shutdown, with the problem appearing this morning.

My Q is this--could something in the igntion system cause a sudden surge to burn the extenders through? I haven't looked at the inside of the distributer caps as yet or to remove the wires. The wires are stock Cavis and also have about 7k miles on them. Any assistance would be appreciated . What about the gas--could a bad batch do something like this?
