Job looks good, but the VHT red isn't even close to the original color. I tried a sample of the VHT red when I had the engine out for the major. The VHT red is too red. Original from factory is a red-orange.

I just finished mine with VHT. I heated it by starting the engine and letting it idle for 5 minutes and then letting it cool down -- this is an effective approach if you have the engine together. I also hit it with the hair dryer. The original color is slightly orange, the VHT color is not that close of a match, but it looks much better than the orange. I actually received a point off in a concours because the paint was "too orange" -- I didn't complain because the paint wasn't in great shape even though it was the orginal color.

I've been holding off on respraying my QV's intake manifold because of the VHT red's color miss-match. Have been hopeing to find a better match in a red wrinkle powder coat. So far haven't even found any shade of red in a powdercoat.

I may just give up on the powdercoat, spray it with VHT's red wrinkle. If I don't like the color, I'll just use an air brush to give it a mist coat of red body paint. Just enough to add the right color but not enough to obscure the wrinkles.

Maybe the factory somehow keeps the paint off the edges to begin with.

Okay, I know I am over analyzing this, but I notice from Jeff's picture, that the "factory" method of removing the excess paint is to wipe it off with a cloth (or something like that) NOT sand it off. Also, notice the factory metal finish is rather dull, with a clear coat spray over it?

Bottom line Jerry, I LIKE what you have done! :-)

lol Ken - Yes, I will never be showing my car or anything nor could I tell if it is an "exact" match. I can just say it looks a heck of a lot better now & unless it was side by side with an original paint job, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Just hope the re-dyeing of the seats turns out as good.... One step at a time. :-)

Hi all.

You know, you just can't replicate that "just had some paint thrown at it in the Factory" look...!

Jerry, exact color match or not, it still looks a heck of alot better than it did! I would choose the 'after' over the 'before' even if the color isn't exact.

Jerry-

In bright sunlight, the colour looks alright.

In subdued light, the red is very dark and just doesn't look right.

Ok, call me anal! :-)

Ken-

The VHT red is obviously not close to the original colour; it looks like the colour in the second photo of the finished product. I've seen a number of cars with VHT, and it just doesn't look right.

I've thought about having a custom mix of the original colour made; shooting with the VHT crinkle, then lightly overspraying with the custom mix.

Ken -

Talking to my mechanic, after years of trying, he said this was the closest match he could get. I guess you can't get the actual paint used back in the 80's on them because it is banned by the EPA in the US due to fleurocarbons used in the paint. I would have to compare mine right next to an original, but it looked like a great match to my eye.

Jerry:

Great job! How is the color compared to the original color? I show my car so I need an exact match as to color. Is the color close to the original red from Ferrari, or an exact match? Thanks.

Ken

I went to sand this morning and was surprised the paint was slightly wet - I ended up using a razor blade to take most the paint off the edges - Actually helped that the paint was slightly wet - It came off like butter. I then sanded with a small palm block sander. I am very happy with the results! Note, the first picture is after using the razer blade, but before sanding.

While my car was in for the major service, thought it was a good time to re-do the red paint on the engine. Here are the steps I followed :

1) Took the part to Napa Auto Parts to have the old Paint Bead Blasted.
2) Taped off edges & Covered with towels.
3) Heated with hair dryer. My mechanic recommended heating in oven for 10 minutes, but all I could visualize was the towels, etc bursting into flames!
4) Painted with VHT Wrinkle Plus Engine Paint. Color SP-204 Red.
5) Will sand edges, Ferrari Logo, 3200 quattrovalvole logo tomorrow & then I will post pic of finished part.
6) Let dry under portable heater.

Thanks to Rob and his documentary at http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/partsandservice/detailing_engine/index.htm It gave me everything I need to know!!! Thanks Rob.
