Success!!!!!! I separated the engine from the trans, and took the front cover off. It came off rather easily. The only excitement during the separation was when I almost stepped on a snake....YUK....I hate snakes!!!....life in the country!!!! David: That nut in the trans case turned out to be a bolt. When the engine was removed, the bolt still stuck up about 1/4 inch from the trans base. To do it right one would slowly unscrew the bolt, as one raises the engine (as I did), or, one would have to remove the left axle. Well, I had enough for now......will take the Boxer out for a cruise!!!!!!! |

David: You where right!!!!! After our phone conversation, I checked, and there is a nut below the axle housing, on the left side. This is accessible from the outside. The limited clearance between the axle shaft, and the nut, didn't allow me to use a box end wrench. Fortunately, an open end was able to loosen the nut. The left side is now seperated!!!!!!! I suspect that I will have to remove the axle shaft, on the left side, in order to re-install the nut. You have just saved me a LOT of frustration, and money!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again, so much!!!!!! |

Well, I had enough of gently trying....it is time for some drastic action. Tomorrow, I will place a hydraulic ram between the head/block, and the support frame......a few tons SHOULD do it......I hope. I will cut wood pieces to fit the head/block contact point, and spread out the force. I had enough for this evening....will finish it up by just cleaning parts.

David: It does help. I was thinking about that "long" stud you referred to before. I thought I was missing something. I used a 2x4 to pry between the engine mount and the block/head area. I am able to move the right side only......will gently keep trying on the left side. Thanks

While doing my TR major service, I have to remove the front engine cover, due to damaged studs. I have removed over 20 17mm nuts that attach the block to the trans case. I also removed 2 14mm nuts in the back (behind the flywheel). What am I missing?......prying just doesn't seem to move the 2 apart. |
