Tommy, if you have Pep Boys locally, they carry them at a good price, but we don't have them here so I went the eBay route, and I think it was $75 for the pair. Bill, no, the horn trumpets didn't have to be moved. Mike, the whole install is a LOT easier if you have the radiator out, and did not require any custom fab. In fact, we were able to leave the original Lucas mounts rather than cut them out.

The individual Hayden fans are 12" each, wired as "pushers" and they move a lot more air than the originals. You'd NEVER be able to get two 18" fans in that space! The entire 308 radiator is only 25" wide!

When using the Hayden fans, is it necessary to move the air horn trumpets to another location ? If so, where did you move yours to?

Hayden offers a twin fan assembly with adjustable mounting brackets, part #3800.
This is the unit I put in my 308.

I'm also interested in the mounting set-up. Don't these types of fans come with plactistic mounting strips which pull through the fins?

Hmm... Charles, did you have to fabricate a new mounting bracket for the fans? Did you have to modify the existing bracket?

I know that some people who have put the haydens in have had to do some metal work to get the mounting just right.

That seems to be one of the more prohibitive things with doing this modification--if it were plug and play, I think it'd be universal.

What changes did you have to do to get them installed?

I don't rember the fan size (maybe 18"). Time to install around 3 hours.

This is a tight fit. They do fit. Still have the factory Lucas fans both work fine. Would like to make someone a deal on them. They probally do just fine in the cooler climates.

Charles--could you direct us to your Hayden fan post? For some reason, nothing ever comes up when I use the Search option on this site.

It's not a pretty story, but my guess is your 308 is overheating. The only cure I know of is taking the radiator to a radiator shop. They will ream it out, check if for leaks and repaint it for under $100. Did it to my 308 GT4 last year, and it runs cool even on very hot days and fans come on only occasionally. This is not a fun job but the results are amazing.

I went threw this issue a few months ago. If it is because you keep getting hot (over 200) I found that replacing the lucas fans with hayden fans helps a whole lot. I posted pictures of the process if you do a search you can probally find them. I hope this helps

Hans-

Obviously, you got the gist of what I was trying to say.

I think I need to hire a proofreader, to unscramble my posts before I send them! :-)

Not quite true, Skip. The RH fan comes on with the A/C switch, but BOTH come on with the rad thermo switch. And both blow thru the rad AND the A/C condenser.

As an alternative to what Peter suggests, you can wire a toggle switch in parallel to the rad thermo switch, giving you both automatic and manual control over both fans. No need to run wires from the radiator, tho, as these leads can be traced back to the fusebox and/or relay box area and the switch connected there. My car is wired that way. After a brief warmup, I turn on the fans if I'm doing strictly city driving. On the highway, I turn the switch off and let the rad thermo switch control it, if necessary. Also, I find that the A/C is much more efficient with both fans working, as it seems to do a far better job of cooling the condenser, especially in traffic.

One fan is for the radiator, the other is for the A/C condenser.

The radiator fan comes on at about 195 deg.F, the A/C fan comes on when the A/C comp. is on.

Do you want both fans to be on all of the time; if so, why?

Simple. Locate the the temp. switch on the rad (should be on the bottom, close to one of the hoses. At least, that's where it is on my GT4). Remove the wires and connect the two ends together. You may use a small piece of wire with two, male spade ends to accomplish this.

Now, whenever you turn the ignition key on, the fans will come on and stay on until you turn the key off.

How do you wire the radiator fans so that they both stay on?
