I'm having the same problem. Mine is temperature related--when it's hot, the speedo works; when it's cold, it sticks at 40mph or so.
Could be the sender, could be the speedometer itself. Apparently cleaning the sender can often fix these problems...
If it's the speedo, many folks have sent them to a place called Palo Alto Speedometer, though recently I read some negative comments about their service...
