I am running a tubi and passed the last 3 times with 1 set of points. My car is due Dec 20 and I got a smog check notice (test only). I called DMV and they said I could non op it and then re register it in January. Not sure if this will work as I have got several stories from them in the past. The bill still floating around that had the provision pulled out mandating smog checks back to 1965 but it still has some lame stuff like DUI type smog check points to check for emmission etc complete with CHP and rolling dynos. Hope it all works!!! Rob |

Jay, my tags haven't been registered since 96, it will be nice to finally be 'legal' once again if the dictatorship in CA will allow me to in 2004, it used to be 25 years, then they bump it up to 30 years. Looking forward to the new year. I am well aware of 75, that is the reason why I bought my year because of no cats. I will never add cats to mine to pass smog, that is ridiculous because mine is an original CA car with the engine plate specifically stating that this vehicle meets or exceeds all smog laws for CA. They made the laws in 75, I didn't, I expect them to abide by their same laws. Engine tested at idle passed in 75. Air pumps burned out my thermos long ago, practically melted my rear bumper by the heat generated by the combustion in the thermos. I remember my thermos used to have an orangey glow when I parked it at night. Then one day, all of that garbage fell off my car. That is a fire hazard, not too mention the MTBE additive that destroys rubber fuel lines that causes fuel fires left and right. |

Yes, 1975 model year cars will be Ca smog exempt on 01/01/04. This is unbelievably good news (for once). 1975 is one of the hardest years to pass smog, as they have no factory Cats. It is even worse in the "Enhanced Inspection" counties. Many people have put cats on to pass smog, but this is technically illegal (you would have to change the complete system, which includes carb jetting, so the cats don't burn up). If you live in Nevada, you will still have to pass smog! |

Model year, not date of manufacture is used to determine eligibility in the Peoples Republic of California. You would think that Hitler was still alive the way that the DMV in CA is operating with their idiotic laws. My 75 will be exempt in 01/01/04. http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/StdPage.asp?Body=/geninfo/factsheets/When_Is_A_Smog_Check_Required-Jun_2003.htm Not all vehicles in California are required to get Smog Check inspections. Whether or not a vehicle needs a Smog Check depends, among other things, on its type and age. In addition, how often a vehicle must get a Smog Check depends on the area of the state in which it is registered. Some Vehicles Are Completely Exempt State law exempts vehicles that are 30 or more model-years old from the Smog Check Program (Program). For example, in the year 2003, all 1974 and older model-year vehicles are exempt, and so on with each new calendar year.

The answer is a guarded ... yes. There was a State Bill floating in the house about changing that but it may not have passed. If that status stays the same, then 1975 model year cars (manufactured in 1974, necessarily) will be exempted in 2004. You will see this soon even on the renewal notices sent out for 1975 cars during the month of Nov and Dec 2003. It will say ... no smog check required. |

Jeff, According to the website below, http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/StdPage.asp?Body=/Smogcheck/doineed.htm All 30 and older model-year vehicles are exempt from all aspects of the Smog Check program, but owners of these vehicles are required by law to keep their emissions systems intact. Vehicles built in 1974 for the 1975 model-year are 1975 vehicles and must be tested accordingly. According to this, next year, 1975 cars will be considered 30 years old, therefore, the answer is YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dom (i've also got a 1975 GT4) |
