Iv'e seen 308's that were turboed, and still kept the stock pistons. Needless to say they didn't last. All it takes is a bit of detonation to take the ring lands out of them. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this might be the case.

Along the lines of washed out rings; you could have a broken ring. A leakdown test is in order.

To my best, action turbo, out of Colorado did the original turbo set up. I'm thinking in the mid 80's. The car is a 1980 308 GTGBi and the turbo was rebuilt in 92. I am seriously considering reverting back to N/A. When the turbo and the car for that matter was working, I truly did enjoy the extra power of the turbo. I have a free dyno coming but with the car running so poor I can't used it. If I had to guess I would say I was doing 245-260 hp. Stock I believe is 215 for the first year injected 308's?

If the problem (oil leak from exhaust) does happen only at idle or low engine load , it may indicate that the turbo seal rings are OK. Agree with Verell diagnose, excessive pressure in crank case as well as poor oil drain from turbo to sumpf can create an over-accumulation of oil in the turbo bearing housing and a spill to the turbine wheel back side. To be noted that at idle/low engine load the pressure on the turbine side is relatively low so that the oil can be " sucked " from the bearing housing, especially if there is an abnormal high pressure. I can post a picture if required.

The turbo is brand new so I hope that it's not the culprit. The old turbo was crap but the car ran much much better. your ideas make sense. I will look into all that you mention. I just can't believe that a turbo with less then 10 miles on it would be crap already?? The car has been running lean from day one but got worse after they installed the new turbo. Thanks for your help I will post results when i get them right now I don't even want to look at the car.

Rick,
There aren't many possibilities:
TURBO OIL SEAL FAILURE:
Sounds like an oil seal may have gone on the turbine side of the turbo. Turbo are basicly cylinders inside of sleeves with pressurized oil in between them. It's even possible that the turbo can't handle the 308's relatively high oil pressure. (This is probably the 2nd best upside diagnosis).

WASHED RINGS:
Michael's washed rings is probably the down side diagnosis. It's also somewhat consistent with crankcase pressure that's high enough to pop the oil cap off. blown out of the exhaust. What doesn't quite match up is why the pressure isn't bleeding off via the crankcase vent system.

PLUGGED UP CRANK VENT SYSTEM:
Only other possibility is that the crankcase vent system is failing to relieve the crankcase pressure thru hose (B) & is thus blowing oil back past the rings. Perhaps this is combined with boosted air leaking from the intake plenum into the crank vent system. (I think there's a check valve where the small hose goes into the intake plenum. If not, perhaps you need to add one.

Still, it all should start with a compression/leak-down check. If it's good,then breathe a sigh of relief & keep looking.

You may have 2 different problems, a turbo oil leak, and a crankcase vent pressure relief problem.

Oil spraying out sounds like the turbo to me, but a quick compression and leak-down are always a good place to start. Then you'll be sure....and I think we need a picture of your set-up because I love to see what people have done.

Rick, i think the rings are washed out, like i said in the other post from too much fuel or bad injectors over a period of time. sounds to me like its getting worse, i dont know why there havent been more replies to your threads, i am guessing the new turbo is too much for the older parts of the engine. i still think a compression test should be done to help answer your questions on the cause of these problems. if you need me to explain anything else in detail please feel free to ask as i have done a lot of work on turbo car, just not on ferraris. i hope you dont need a rebuild!!!!!! i am hoping to get a carbed car myself just for the reason that its easier for a mechanic/ car guy like me to work on. please post any new changes or findings, i would love to be WRONG and your car is ok!!!

Reference thread: (oil cap blowing off) Now I have oil, a good amount of it, blowing out the tail pipe. Upon start up, a puff of smoke, some sputtering and baby back fires. I get out to take a look and black oil is spraying out the exhaust. Keep in mind I just had the turbo replaced. Did it get fried again? I am about to tear the whole car a part piece by piece and rebuild it. Or go back to N/A.
