I like to test the engine warm, but those number look fine for a cold engine. Your oil could still be coming from worn guides, a pluged vent or your turbo. |

What about a leak down test? I heard that a compression test isn't as much of a truth teller than a leakdown test... Any results? |

On each bank, for pre and post oil, take the difference in the max and the min cylinders. This is one useful metric. Also figure this difference a percentage of the min cylinder--this shows the variance as a maximum percentage, another useful metric. Others on the thread can interpret this variance and comment... What elevation are you at?

I did the compression test this weekend and not sure what to make of the results. The front bank of cylinders I got 168, 173, 157, 167 on the rear bank I have 170, 168, 162, 162. Keep in mind that this without warming up the engine. I then added a few drops of oil to each cylinder and got, in the same order as above, 182,198,169,189 and 187,184,170,204 any ideas out there on these results? I am going to repeat the test tonight and see if I get consistant results.

Verell, Thanks for the comments and suggestion. I am ready to do the compression test. I will have the results by Monday. It was suggestions and comments like yours, that led me to believe without a test, I should overhaul the engine. I pretty much have my mind made up. I'm doing the test for peace of mind. I don't know if it related to anything but I noticed a pool of coolant resting on the top of my heads. Is it there from a previous problem that's been fix or and existing one? I'm sure I find out. I am curious as to all that I'll find as I dive deaper into the engine? I have a feeling it has a lot in store for me.

So you're 'assuming' you're going to need a rebuild & doing contingency planning. Thought maybe you'd gotten some new info that hsdn't been posted in either place. You've already seen my diagnosis suggestions in the other thread. |

(How did you go from your last post in the "308 turbo oil spray in exhaust?" thread to here?) Easy if I understand your question. I have a new (replacement)turbo that, from what I gather, is pointing out a sick engine. Do to poor idle, smoke and oil leaking and spraying out the exhaust. Sounds like an overhaul to me(rings, valves, headgasket or pistons?) . I am still in the diagnos stage so if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them. I hope to have the results of my compression test by Monday. |

Search the "Technical Q&A Archives" for "engine removal" rebuild . There are even some threads with pix of engines being pulled. (No, they don't drop) If you don't already have both the factory service manual & a factory parts catalog for your model, best to get copies of them(see below). BTW, the Ferrari service manuals assume you're a very experienced & Ferrari trained mechanic that just needs a reference for detailed specs, etc. It's nowhere near the kind of a detailed step by step book that the big3 & japanese car mfg. service manuals are. CAUTIONARY NOTE: Unless you are a very experienced mechanic, better get a couple of very good books on engine rebuilding, then consider very very carefully whether or not you're up to rebuilding your own engine. The consequence of blowing a rebuild is a ~$10,000 lump of scrap metal. If you haven't successfully rebuilt several engines, then reconsider a 2nd time. BTW, how did you go from your last post in the "308 turbo oil spray in exhaust?" thread to here? --------------------------------------------- Here are some pointers to other online resources that you'll probably find useful: 'Online Service Manual' - http://www.cameragear.com/ec/ 308 GTB Register TechTips - http://www.r-design.net/308/index_e.html Ferrari Club of America:Northwest Region Site: FerrariFAQ - http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/ (Click on Ferrari FAQ & scroll down) FerrariList.com: DIY and Mechnical information and instructions - http://www.ferrarilist.com/?query=docs&action=catlist&cat=5 Forum: Technical/DIY - http://www.ferrarilist.com/forum/list.php?f=3 Also the FerrariList archives are searchable. Does anyone know of an 308 engine removal or overhaul thread? Any reference material would be helpful. How does one remove a 308 engine? Drop or pluck? I suspect I need a ring, valves, gaskets... you know the works! |
