Usually the sulphuric smell is due to a vy rich mixture. Often smell it in cars when the O2 sensor has failed & the system is running in 'limp along' mode. Air pump problems(ie: too little air injected into the cat) can also cause it, altho usually a much milder case.

Worth checking into as you could be slowly cooking your cat with too rich a mix.

The only time mine has smelled that way was when it was missing from a bad spark plug extender. Are you sure its not missing?

Jack,
If you find anything in the archives let me know. My car does the same thing and my inspection went through fine.

Bad me! One of my goals was never to post a thread that could be searched. Now I just feel damn lazy. I'll check it out.

Jack, search the archives, there was an explanation about what is happening and why it smells. My car does the same thing.

I believe that the sufur smell comes from your catalytic converter. I am not sure what the issue is. FWIW, my 2003 Saab 9-3 does it, too.

Is it normal for the exhaust to smell a bit funny, almost sulfuric? I just ran through emission testing and scored better than our Civic. Just curious.
