Having put two new warning light ECUs on my TR (and other's posts here), I'd have to say it's not unheard of to need a replacement warning light ECU (but like Julio posted, the first thing to do is check/refresh the wiring/connectors in the engine bay). About all you can do is watch/confirm the self-test behavior at each start and for any other odd behavior (like immediate illumination at cold light-off) to judge the warning light ECU's health or non-health.
Your light comes "on", but then goes/stays "off" after immediate restart is a good sign that it's a ECU/electrical gremlin IMO, but if the light comes on again, it's always best to (stop and) give the exhaust system a quick visual -- if it's a real over-temp fault, the cat outlet (where the thermocouple is mounted) should be "glowing" red (and maybe some nearby stuff would be smoking ).

I had a similar problem recently in my 328. It turns out that the thermocouple cable was teared where it comes into the trunk. The metal had peeled the cable and it was making casual contact to GND.

Check that before you spend big $ in replacing the Tehrmocouple (~200 US$), CCU (~2000US$) or the cat.

Julio.

A friend's 308 was doing a similar thing and it was traced back to a bad batch of lower octane gas he bought in a rural part of Maine.

If you bought a brand of gas recently without the higher octane- run it low and fill up with a known brand of 93 and see if that helps.

Can't hurt to try it. I don't know if the 308 QV system and your 328 are drastically different so maybe your car doesn't care what gas you use.

Also, welcome to F-chat. The more owners that get involved in this site, the better it will be.

I've tried searching this but to no avail - I have an 87 328 14000 miles, v. well serviced. Recently solid (never flashed) Slow down light came on - once after 1/2 hour freeway drive, once after 10 min local drive. once you turn off the car and restart light stays off. Respected, experienced, Ferrari mechanic pulled the cat and said all is fine - believes it to be an ECU or probe error - recommended ignoring, disconnecting or pulling the bulb, rather than messing with the electronics which he said may take for ever or be very costly.. Just seemed like an odd way to solve the problem rather than finding the cause - does this seem typical?
