Make sure when you do the bleed procedure, that you start cold or slightly warm with the tank cap off, and the heater valves open. The final coolant level in the tank should be about 6 cm below the filler neck. If you end up much above that, no big deal, but you may "boil it off" and see it on the ground after a few drives....

Well, a mechanic suggested I bleed the system and there was a good amount of air that came out. I also let the car warm up and the fans did indeed start up right on cue (just north of 195F). Temperature retreated on cue.

I hope my problem is solved...

No connection between fan operation and the air con on a 328, that is 308 specific...

I've read the archives about radiator fans coming on with the AC, but still don't know if the AC should automatically kick on the fans in an '86 328. Mine don't.

I will be bringing the car up to temp today and see if the fans come on at ~195F...

Tod-

If all they did was the WP, you got hosed.

Sorry to let you know.

Ed, you know Ed, just did water pump, timing belts, suspension bushings, rear brakes and weatherstripping for the roof (and some more work which I can't remember), for about what you paid for the WP job.

The customer, who supplied most of the parts, and is a friend of mine and an FCA member, takes his Ferrari, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Hummer and whatever to ED. So do many of us.

If you want to save $$, talk to Ed.

check that your fans are coming on at around 195 or so. Just start in your driveway and watch the temp gauge. Very common for the thermo switch to fail. You can buy a switch for a 78-79 Rabbit, and even get one that comes on a little sooner (around 180 degrees) versus the stock 195 degree. Only $14 or $15, versus $45 to $50 for the Ferrari one.

Of course, a stuck thermostat may keep the hot water from ever reaching the thermo switch in the radiator too...hmmmm.

Check your water pump... A few weeks ago, for about a week, I noticed an antifreeze smell while driving my 328, never saw any antifreeze until one day when i pulled into my garage, steam comming from the engine compartment with a strong smell of antifreeze. Well, the water pump was leaking and dripping on the exhaust, so it would evaperate and that was the smell..

I took it in and it was the water pump. They were able to rebuild it. Cost about $1,500 for that repair...

So, you may want to check your water pump, listen for different sounds too from the engine..

While I was at a light, I noticed that my water temp had gone very warm (halfway between 195 and 250); higher than I'd ever seen it. It's not that hot here today and I wasn't running the car really hard.

As I took off from the light, I noticed the temp guage slowly dropping, and then it suddenly moved to a very cool reading. I checked the guage at the next red light, but it stayed right at about normal (6 o'clock).

Stuck themostat? Also, I have been noticing a wiff of antifreeze lately, but hadn't seen any on the garage floor.
