A reason for slow windows can be water which can enter the motor via the leads, seep through the motor end end up in the gearbox, effectively destroying the bronze bearing bushing.
Did on my 328.
Installed new motor, Bosch part.
Will post part number when I get home in a few days.
Fiat 131 Mirafiori uses same motors and needs only minor modification to the connector plug.
However, I don't know if the Fiat 131 was ever imported in the US.
Water can enter via the black window support running up aft of the triangular window - the rubber seal running along the outer coaming has to make a detour around the post, leaving little triangular voids where water can enter.
I sealed these voids with black caulking and has not seen water inside the door since.
Also the alignment between the motor assembly, including the lifting mechanism should be checked against the position of the window rails.
Strangely enough, they are not fixed to the same side of the door interior which would fix them in relation to each other. If the inner part of the door is moved relative to the outer part, as was the case on my car, where the inner part had been pushed out, there will be binding within the window mecahnism itself due to misalignment.
This was corrected be pulling the inboard side back in position.
Hope I made myself understandable on this last part.
I tried to find previous threads where I described this in detail, but didn't succeed.
It must have been back sometime in '01.

Philip,
Did you clean & re-lube the window drive mechanism?

Philip,
While running #10 wire often works, it still leaves the window switches and fuse block in the motor power circuit.

The switches themselves (especially old switches) have been known to have enough resistance to slow the motors down, and the fuse block is a known weak spot for high resistance contact.

The relay fix was developed to remove the switches & fuse block from the high-current motor power circuit. This eliminates the risk of frying a window switch or the fuse block with the motor current while making the highest possible voltage available to the window motors.

Rob, this is an example of a great post, but if searching it might be tough to find based on the title.

It's a very common problem with the entire 3x8 series.

First thing to do is to clean & re-lubricate the window regulator gear drive. The OEM lubricant turns to something between cosmolene & tar. (One FChat member called it 'half-cured epoxy' which isn't far off either!) Anyway, no matter how you describe it, it really gums up the works!

Generally the cleaning/relubricating service procedure is sufficient to restore full speed.

In the occasional case where cleaning isn't sufficient, then there's a procedure for using relays to get more power to the window motors by reducing the resistance between the battery and the motor. CAUTION: If you're doing the relay mod, you MUST do the clean/relubricate service first. The resistance between the motors & the battery is all that's keeping the motors overloaded by the tarry grease from frying themselves. If you do the relay mod w/o the service, then there's very little in-line resistance & there's a good chance the motors will fry themselves.

Here are pointers to the :
1)SLOW POWER WINDOW SERVICE PROCEDURE by Ed Schreyer/Verell Boaen:

BTW, In the above thread, there's a subsequent post describing changing cable tension as the window moves. This is not normal. I believe that the reason Stewart Chung was having the changeing tension problem is that he's got the cable miss-routed between a pair of pulleys(been there, done that).

Oh, yes, Another FChat member suggested buying 1/16" stainless steel cable(nice & limp) with crimp-on ends from Sears Hdw, etc. & replacing the engire cable. Sounded good to me.

The problem with alot of slow windows is that the motor is only receiving 8 volts vs. 12. To see if this is your problem take off the door panel and jump the motor directly to the battery. If this test corrects then you need to change the relays.

I had the same annoying problem with my passenger window on my 328 and had it fixed by Classic Coach. They put a relay in and now it goes up/down no problem.

A couple "quick and dirty" tricks I have done is to remove the switches, disassemble and clean the contacts. You can also use a little silicone spray on the window felt tracks. Both of these actions will help some.

Look in the "Parts & Service" section.
Good info there.

The passenger window on my 328 is very slow up and down. Anyone know if this is a common problem and whether there is a ready fix? Thanks.
